Thread: I hate Daylight Savings Time

Re: I hate Daylight Savings Time

    Exactly.

The planet wobbles, thus our seasons. We can either just ignore it and stick doggedly to our arbitrary measurement of time, or we can tweak that same arbitrary measurement to try to better match the movement of the planet.

I don't like it, but since I can't change the rotation of the planet that's just what we get IMO.

Thanks for the link. Now there are at least three of us, Citizen, who think humans are capable of adjusting to natural conditions, we can heat our homes in the winter, cool our homes in the summer, and adjust our timekeeping to the wobble of the earth.

Speaking of the wobble, happy solstice everyone! Rest assured, the sun will return.

The incoming new administration has plans to do away with DST.

Read info about their proposed intent for change.

I think folks will be sorry. I know I'll love showing up for work before sunrise.. at 9am.

DJT said it's 50/50 so let's move on.

Almost 100 minutes a month gained in February and March in my latitude. I don't want those minutes before 5am.

lol. Yeah this is one we entirely agree.

It was an hour. I didn't even think about it b/c it was an off day for me, so no specific alarm, and my computer and phone both autochanged. No big deal. My sleep swings WAY more than one hour from night to night, and on a weekend most people can adjust to it with their schedule.

Mostly though it's just that this is how the Earth moves though space, and adjusting our artificial and arbitrary clocks to it seems to make more sense than pretending we don't have seasons that have more and less daylight.

This seems the best way to keep us and our bodies in relative sync with the wobble of the planet. I think it's telling that Musk did a poll on X and everyone seemed to want to change it, but 60% wanted all DST and the other 40% wanted no DST.

No one likes the change, but 60/40 is a long way from unanimous on which way to go with it, so this seems a good compromise to me.

    I hate Daylight Savings Time

I’d rather have more daylight when I get home. But I can understand both sides. Bush adjusting it some was probably a good compromise.

Re: I hate Daylight Savings Time

I prefer evening light up to the point I'm driving to work before sunrise. To me it's depressing to get up, get ready and be at work in the dark, which is what happens if we stick with summer dst all year.

OTOH I don't want to have sunrise at 4:30 and dark at 7pm either if I can help it (not exact, you get the idea), which is the problem with summer without DST. I do prefer the DST hours where for most of the DST period sunrise is at least by 8am or earlier, and we get to light as late as about 9:30 or so in this area, but certainly 8-9pm.

No solution is ideal b/c we all really want sunrise about 6am and sunset about 9 or 10pm I think but the Good Lord didn't build it that way.

It's a compromise both between the wants of the People and the nature of the planet. An imperfect but probably our best solution IMO.

I am also sure some people are impacted by the hour shift, but it's never even been a blip for me. My sleep schedule changes more than that every night depending on work and activities. If it were 4-5 hours I'd get it, but I find those studies talking about huge issues at work to be pretty suspect over one hour. More people go out partying every weekend and being sluggish on Monday than people impacted by the clock change IMO.

Re: I hate Daylight Savings Time

Sunrise at 4:34am 6/20 full time MST or 9:01 am 12/20 full time MDT would not be as convenient and practical as my iPhone automatically adjusting an hour for the off kilter earth.

Businesses and schools changing their start times so they don't open in the pitch dark in winter, or waste three hours of daylight in the summer, or my iPhone and other smart clocks automatically adjusting an hour for the off kilter earth.

    Easy decision

Re: I hate Daylight Savings Time

I have to admit...when the thread started, I was completely of the mindset that I was against DST, and I have been convinced that my original position was wrong. It makes too much sense; was a good idea when it started, and remains so now.

I like to try to see both sides of something, and had not done a good enough job of seeing "the other side" on this one. Even if I'm "impacted" by the "loss of sleep," it's only one day. And I can count on one hand the times I've had to be up on a Sunday where we sprung ahead, and I had to set an alarm to wake up because of something I had to do (I mean, if I need to be at church at 11 a.m. on Sunday, I still don't need an alarm if it's "really" 10.)
