    Any MAC OS aficionados here?

I’ve been given an older MacBook and I don’t know anything about it or making it work

Find the "on" button and press it. I'll see myself out.

Does it power up. If so you can upgrade the OS for free to the max of that device.

I bought a used one for my daughter when she was younger and found youtube and Reddit was my friend. I do not know any of the Apple OS very well but can copy what others do.

I have an older ipad 2 that Apple no longer supports or provides upgrades to the OS so now it is basically an electronic picture frame for me and can watch movies on it for streaming.

It’s a 2012 MacBook. It has a 1TB solid state drive, 16GB of memory. Both items were upgraded to the max. It connects to internet, however, it won’t connect on Safari (browser) or the App Store. So I can’t update it, without some knowledge I just don’t possess.
I’ve never had a Mac, but would like to experience it before dropping some coin to buy a current one.

Darrin, that does not make sense. Are you saying it is showing the wifi connected but you cannot get Safari to connect. Sounds more like you have a bad network adapter or card (unless a Mac has the network on the motherboard).

    Does this help??

It connects, YouTube will work, but Safari, nor the App Store will work. As I read, the Mac OS version on this is Lion, and can be upgraded to Catalina. I think what I’m gonna need to do is down load the files necessary to my iPad and move the with a USB to the Mac to update the OS.
Apparently the certificates for Safari aren’t valid in Lion….

A friend suggested a few items and I took his advice. He had me download macOS Sierra on a USB stick. It can be downloaded via a browser, and is the latest version available via browser. All others above that are in the App Store and I couldn’t connect. Updated to Mac OS sierra.
Step 2 was to look at the system root certificates, and set to custom setting and the SSL to always trust. Only one certificate was out of spec. I corrected it.
Lastly he suggested to created another connection preference than “automatic” on the connection preferences. I corrected that as well…..and wala the App Store allowed me to connect. I update to Mac OS Catalina and everything is peachy. For an old relic it’s actually pretty snappy compared to a Windows laptop.

Yeah I use a 2016 Macbook and it’s not 64 bit and Safari is not recognized any more, so I’m paying attention here. Thank you!

Re: Any MAC OS aficionados here?

I’ve been reading, and finally updating my MacBook. Google open core legacy patcher to find the details. Several videos are on YouTube about how to do the upgrades. Open Core Legacy patcher allows old Mac computers to be updated to a Mac OS the Apple doesn’t support for your particular computer. My MacBook was only supported to Catalina 10.15,7. I’ve updated my MacBook to Sonoma 14. Not the latest Mac OS version (that is Sequoia, 15). The updated version isn’t quite as quick as Catalina, but still quite suitable in my opinion. Hope this helps.

Cat, I’m a Mac user as well. On the older ones you have to be a bit careful updating to the latest OS so I’m glad you didn’t. Those will run VERY hot and have your fan in overdrive.
I love my Mac and wouldn’t switch back for anything. But it def takes some getting used to.
I have a Word doc on some handy cheats and shortcuts on a Mac. I’ll post it on here when I can find it.

This MacBook isn’t my daily driver, but it’s been a good introduction to Apple computers for me. Some things aren’t “windows” intuitive to me. They are however fairly easy to figure out.
I have a windows laptop, and a windows desktop. Let’s just say they are saddled down with security software that makes them unpleasantly slow to use for any task. A 12 year old MacBook runs circles around both of them…..
