  • Miami Redhawks a Good Prep for UK

The Cats are in preparation for the Miami Redhawks who was a 52-14 loser to Marshall University. Though the Wildcats are not good enough to take anybody lightly this game is a perfect team to play coming off the loss to Western Kentucky University. The Redhawks run the triple-option which causes the Kentucky team to have to be much more discipline than they were Saturday night. Being assignment conscious was the main problem the Cats had on defense last game. Given they were trying to do to and getting out of position this created a lot of holes for the opposition to run in. Defensive line coach Jimmy Brumbaugh said they were getting out of there gaps which created holes. Miami is the "cradle of coaches" in that they have produced the great Paul Brown, Bo Schembechler, Ara Parseghian, and Woody Hayes but have seemingly fallen on hard times since the drive for nickname change.

The Redhawks had much the same problems that Kentucky has in their had nine first time starts and Kentucky had eleven. For the young guys at Kentucky the biggest adjustment is understand the speed of the game and the intensity and the physicality they need to play with. These are things you don't understand until you are in a game with and opponent that's hostile.

Brumbaugh was asked what his biggest surprise was. He said - "The biggest surprise was to see the guys that I could put in depth wise." The idea has been floated that Bud Dupree will be moved back to a linebacker position but was debunked by D. J. Eliot. Eliot said they have a 3-4 package that has Dupree at an outside linebacker. To the fact that UK was poor setting the edge containment Brumbaugh said they hit they (WKU) with a couple different things and the inability to avoid and get off the cut block.
Brumbaugh said - "I've played against triple-option teams Army and Navy and know what we have to get done."

"I knew that playing in the SEC we had to stop the run," defensive line Coach Jimmy Brumbaugh said. The coach said that he feels they can play Travaughn Pascal at linebacker because he has five guys he can put in the game and be fine. Other than the starters he has the others Farrington Huguenin, Jason Hatcher, and Alvin Davis. "Jason did some good things late in the game once he got a chance to adjust to the speed of the game, the intensity, and the physicality of playing in these big games.

Pascal said that practice is basically the same but more focused on doing their assignments and not trying to be Superman. The youngster said his move to linebacker will be smoother for him because he has from time to time taken reps at the position so it's a small transition rather than a major transition.

Stoops talks about the change of Pascal to the linebacker. Stoops said - "He'll be a good player. It's not good in that you've missed all those reps with all the different pressure, everything you do. You've got to go back to square one him and re-teach him so that's not fun. You've got to see as much as he can handle but you've got to keep moving on with your package." Stoops said they saw early that he could play that position but they were a little banged up at defensive end and couldn't move Pascal.

As the old adage goes, the most improvement occurs in a team from week one to week two. The coach said they need to find the right guys to put in the position to win.

Terrific analysis, Lonny. I know it is going to be a long year, but working through the process will be important.
