  • "We are a much better team than what we showed today"

    By: DARRELL CARTWRIGHT

"We are a much better team than what we showed today."

Sounds like Joker Phillips after Louisville, but was instead spoken by Willie Taggart, head coach of Western Kentucky University, after playing Alabama on Saturday.

Coach Taggart's Hilltoppers fell to the # 1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide 35-0. The Hilltoppers managed some good things, including sacking Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron six times. But one thing they did not do well was hang onto the ball.

"You can't win many ball games with four turnovers," Taggart said. "We are a much better team than what we showed today."

Coach Taggart appears to have adopted an approach designed to make his team think about securing the ball. Apparently certain players--perhaps the ones responsible for the "dropsies" versus Alabama--will be carrying a ball around with them this week. Taggart is also soliciting the assistance of the entire WKU student body, and others, to help his training this week.

"If anyone see any of our players with a ball in their hand, slap it out and bring it to me," Taggart explained. "You will get to travel with us to UK. Go Tops!"

Reports are Western Kentucky has been pointing to this game for more than a year, after WKU gave Kentucky all it wanted, and then some last season in Nashville. The two teams opened the season last year at the neutral site, LP Field, where Kentucky won 14-3 in a game that was closer than the score might indicate, as the score was 7-3 Wildcats late in the 4th quarter before a Morgan Newton touchdown pass with 4:43 to play put the game out of reach.

Western Kentucky will attempt to be the second Sun Belt Conference team to upset a Southeastern Conference team this season, as fellow conference member Louisiana Monroe (ULM) defeated # 8 Arkansas, 34-31 in overtime in Little Rock Saturday night. Kickoff for Kentucky v Western Kentucky is at 7 p.m. Saturday.

4 TOs and losing by 'only' 35 to mighty Bama ain't bad for this WKU team.

The disparity in level of competition is obvious in this case. Between UL/UK it is not...

I have a hard time believing UL is that good. They may be, but I haven't seen anything other than a really good QB that sets them apart.
