Flood warning is in effect for your area until mid afternoon.

I am pretty fortunate with the river in the backyard. Very seldom does it get very far out of its banks. I am on the high bank. My back deck is probably 18 feet above the river bank. The flood plain is on the opposite shore. Less than a quarter mile downstream are the marshlands. They take most of the water when it floods. What doesn’t go there winds up in my neighbor’s yard across the river. His property is in the flood plain.

Sounds like you are high and dry. 18 feet would probably equate to a flood of epic proportions in your neighborhood.

It would be epic. That is for sure. I’ve got the beauty of the river without a lot of associated problems. Attached is an article on the Cahaba that might interest you along with a link to some photos of the Cahaba Lily. The river is a photographer’s paradise. The Cahaba lilies which bloom in late May and June on the shoals are as majestic a flower as you will find. It you are in a canoe or Kayak the giant blooms are at eye level.

That is most certainly a good looking flower.

As boss said that is an impressive flower. Rivals the rhododendron for native wildflower beauty in the south.
