Surprisingly, I've done pretty well, starting with $10,000 and now I am at 22,000, but I'm still not betting enough because I can't get over the fact that it's not real money, it's not betting, it's a contest. I'm in sixth place out of 30, but the leader has $100,000.
Anyway, that's a lot of background just to let you know about my bad beat last week.
I had a parlay that was going to pay $6,000 with the last leg of it being Boise State to beat Colorado State.
Boise State had defeated Colorado State 12 straight times. They led Colorado State 30-10 with a little over 4 minutes to play.
In those four plus minutes..
Colorado state scored a touchdown, cutting the lead to 30-17. Fine, still a 13-point lead and they have to kick off.
Onside kick, successful.
Okay, so we play a little defense but lo and behold, they score again with one minute 53 seconds to play. Now the lead is only 30- 24. This makes me nervous.
Onside kick, successful.
Wait. Not quite, they have a penalty and have to re-kick. Thank goodness.
They re-kick and Boise State recovers. Thank goodness. Game surely over by now, correct?
Not so fast.
Boise State fails to get a first down, and has to punt the ball back to Colorado State with 33 seconds to play.
With no timeouts remaining, and if I remember correctly, 80 yards or so to cover, it still did not look likely. First play is a penalty. Next play a short game, but then a 44 yard bomb that allows them to get to the 33 yard line, run up to the line, and Spike it with six seconds to play.
I'm watching this with "money" on the game. Surely they'll keep the Hail Mary from working, won't they?
Hail Mary into the end zone, and the Boise State Defenders execute perfectly, spiking the ball straight down.
Except.
Except somehow, some way, a Boise State Defender is diving low to the ground, throws his arms under the ball before it hits the ground, tips it into the air to himself, and catches it.
Tie game. Colorado State erupts, and their entire roster seems to empty on to the field.
Excessive celebration penalty? Yes indeed.
Does moving the extra point back 15 yards result in a miss, putting the game into overtime and Boise State with a chance to recover and still win?
No, indeed not.
And that is why I do not gamble.
