Since the news doesn't cover the PNW unless there is something political going on, you might now know about the insane weather we have been having in the past year. To cap off last year, the Cascade mountains have been getting record amounts of snow. While temps are overall warmer than usual, it is bringing with it far more snow. For example, Snoqualmie Pass (the mountain pass for Interstate 90) has already received over 20 feet of snow. At this point, every single major East-West passes are closed due to snow fall/avalanche risk.
On top of that, the lower lying areas are receiving heavy amounts of rain. Interstate 5 (the only major southernly route) is now closed due to flooding just south of Seattle and closed due to landslides just north of Seattle. As such, there is no surface route into or out of the metro Seattle area.
As WSDOT provided "to the minute" updates yesterday about the evolving situation, they turned to their sense of humor

What's even more impressive is that they clearly have support from their management. Not having a mid-level fun-haring beaurocrat/manager stomping on their fun helps.
