    First Day

First day on a new job. After 16.5 years of being Director of IT for a college I am going to work for a local utility to become their ISO (Information Systems Officer).

Cool. New start might be good. I am in a similar situation. I start new job a week from Monday

I hope so. I loved the college. It was like home. I had lots of freedom and left a lot of good behind. But we currently have a horrible CFO. I'm the third director to leave under him in about 6 months. The other two had been there 25+ years. And another Chief is equally as bad, just in other ways. The place is really struggling and I fear a system office take over at some point, and I do not want to be there for that.

Wow, what is up with college IT departments? WKU has lost 2 department managers in the last 3 years. My SIL quit and went to work for an HR contractor at Fort Knox, and my next door neighbor left them 2 1/2 years ago and went to work as the manager of all things ISP related for the Russellville Electric Plant Board.

Funding and pay likely. Despite the trend of increasing technology, budgets and support for IT in colleges seem to be dying.

Donors and administrators can't put their names on IT systems like they can buildings.

So we get lots of new buildings, very little investment in things like IT, some of which would negate the need for those buildings.
People keep asking if I'm back and I haven't really had an answer. But now, yeah, I'm thinkin' I'm back.

It’s a lot cheaper to pay someone in India to ask if you tried rebooting.

My SIL's message on his answering machine is, Hello this is Aaron, have you tried rebooting the device? If answer is yes and it is a desktop machine, is the device plugged in and if plugged in to a surge protector or power strip, is the little orange light glowing?
If the device is a phone or a tablet, do you have more than 0 bars showing in the battery window?
