This is an old article, published in 2014, and I am hoping it is not accurate. Although, it might not bother me at all to see the Taliban rounded up and forced to work in labor camps a couple thousand feet below sunlight.

Japan discovered a huge source of rare earth minerals just off their coast in 2018 and are setting up extraction operations.

Furthermore, there is a lot of research into reducing the types and amounts of rare earth elements needed in industry.

In the US it gets harder and harder to search for those elements.
