    DNS/transferring to domain question

So...daughter has a website she create free, and upgraded to a paid version. They told her it would take up to 48 hours to have the new domain active as a website (I'm probably saying that wrong).

They told her she could check at https://www.whatsmydns.net/ and when there were all green check marks, her domain would be transferred, but when red X marks appeared, they were still working on it.

But I randomly spot checked three other websites that are up and running and have been for years. And there are "some" red X marks on those, yet they are fully functioning, working websites (such as this one).

Were they just telling her something to make her feel better and get off their backs?

    Re: DNS/transferring to domain question

    Well, all of that depends.

First, who is the vendor? Did she buy the domain from the same people setting up the website? If so she needs to make sure she owns the domain, not them.

You also said "transferred"? Does that mean the domain was already owned? Transferred from who to whom?

I'll need a bit more info to give an answer. Basically there is the domain, which has its ownership and then it's host, and then has it's own settings and info, and then there is the website, which can have a different host and has its own files and info.
People keep asking if I'm back and I haven't really had an answer. But now, yeah, I'm thinkin' I'm back.

She created a site with Wix.

She bought a domain from Wix (I think). But it shows as Network Solutions.

The premium upgrade/domain is from Wix as well.

I don't know if that helps or not. Basically, she has a complete website on the Wixsite.com website (free), and has another domain.

Judging from Rachel’s hair she obviously received a generous number of hair follicles from her mom’s genetics.

    OK, good news.

Yes network solutions hosts the site. That's good, very reputable company that is probably still the biggest corporate domain holder. It has privacy engaged so the WHOIS doesn't say she owns it, but hopefully that transaction was all legit.

Looks like all she needs to do is go into Wix and set it to point to her website. That's going to depend on the way Wix does things, but looks to me like they handle setting the DNS info through Network Solutions so she doesn't have a separate login, etc.

I host a bunch of domains obviously, but I have them all at a host where I edit the DNS myself. Going through wix she should be able to do it through her account.

She believes she has done that...the question is whether it was done correctly or not, and whether that site they showed her with the status of the DNS is just a way of putting her off or not.

Here's what it shows on the Wix site from her page....it's been 40+ hours out of the 48 they claim it might take to transfer it...

It could take more than 48 hours before everyone can view it. After Wix does their part it may take another 24 hours for various servers to update their domain lists. They usually update once a day.

    Re: DNS/transferring to domain question

You can set the DNS records to update faster, etc., but yes there is an inherent delay depending on the server, the refresh settings on the records and the kind of update being done.

This is probably the registration of an entirely new domain name, not just an update of a record within one, for example to re-point a domain or mail server, etc. So it could take some time to get out to the servers.

The problem for me is that it goes to a Wix landing page, so the domain is active and pointing to a page, it's just not HER page. It could still take up to 48 hours to reach the whole of the internet, but based on distance, etc. it should start showing up here and there sooner in most cases.

I control my own, and have set my own refresh rates for things I may need to change quickly, so I don't know their settings. It's still possible, but the domain exists on the servers, it's just pointing to that landing page right now.

You should have an answer by tomorrow either way given that we're coming in on 48 hours or more now aren't we?

I called them after the 48 hours expired.

They said, "hmm. Looks like you did everything right. Just a second... Now refresh."

It worked. (I'll leave it so you can see).

I asked him what he did and he said "I clicked a button that disconnected it then reconnected it. It works every time."

It literally was one second. He didn't even pretend lol. I was joking with him that it took me longer to plug in a lamp and unplug it.

I have the same company for my little website and when I did this some time ago it was nearly instant, literally just a couple of minutes. Crazy.

That means the DNS was set and working, but the Wix handling of it wasn't. That's why the fix was immediate.

I really had a feeling it was something like that. Literally like flipping a light switch. Same amount of time. The guy was so nice, and also helped me get a 50% off deal for 3 years for it that it alleviated my frustration in having to wait 48 hours to ask them what the problem was, and for him to do that.

I hope I got the right website for her. She has added a ton of things since it went "live," and I worry that all the new videos will be more bandwidth or something than I got for her. I doubt it will get much traffic, though, so maybe traffic is the concern.

I got the storage space of 10GB and "Video Hours" of 1 hour. Hopefully that's enough. Before the upgrade it was only 3GB storage space and 30 Minutes of "Video Hours" (I don't even know what that means.)

    Re: DNS/transferring to domain question

Well the GB is the total storage, including the uploaded videos, etc.. I know you know that part.

The "video hours" is likely streaming time in cumulative time for a 30 day billing period. So if she has a 5 minute video I would have to be watched 60/5 times to hit the limit.

That's just a guess though. Since I do all my own hosting I really don't know how these hosting companies do such things. I lease dedicated servers and other than them keeping them running what I do otherwise, like hosting KSR, is my business.

Let's say she has 30 minutes of video on the site.

Does that mean that if two people end up watching every video she has (doubtful--there are a lot of very short, less than 1 minute videos and some won't apply), she'll be at her hour limit?

Dang...she really needs to upload to YouTube if that's the case.

    Re: DNS/transferring to domain question

is there anything in the video you wouldn't want on Youtube? For some it's an age thing, not wanting younger kids on there b/c there is more exposure.

I googled Wix and "video hours" may just be video minutes stored on the site for viewing, i.e. you can have an hours worth of video on the site. That's how part of it reads. It looks like you get the "out of video hours" on uploading more video, not people watching.

Did they give you any numbers on bandwidth? Looks like they have a 500MB limit on free accounts, you probably got bumped to 1GB or so. That's a lot for her site, even with videos, so you should be fine.

I think it's just storage space, and if your bandwidth is even 500MB you're probably more than fine right now.

Youtube continued: got off that topic.

Youtube is good for adding exposure for her, and solves any video/bandwidth issues, but it also has the downside of more exposure, which may not be all it's cracked up to be as we all know.

    DNS/transferring to domain question

I can see it both ways.

She upgraded from the free account, which was probably 500MB, to the first premium plan, which was 3GB, and then yesterday upgraded that to 10GB, which I thought was overkill (I hope). It's an $18/month plan down to $9 prepaid for 3 years. They run their 50% off special occasionally (I have the same wix), and I figured it was worth it. The 50% off didn't apply to the first premium level.

For goodness sake, I hope that's enough.

Great question about YouTube. I guess she'll have to make that decision, but I think she'd want as much exposure as possible (or maybe not...). Nothing is that bad. But her call I guess. Definitely has some downside as well. I think for now she's pretty targeted so wide-spread YouTube may not fit with what she wants to do. (lol I edited this post because I think my initial thought probably was wrong).

    Re: DNS/transferring to domain question

    Here's what they offer:

Free Wix sites come with (up to) 500MB of storage and (up to) 500MB bandwidth. You can increase your site's storage and bandwidth by upgrading to one of the following Premium Plans:

    Plan Name Storage Bandwidth

    1. Combo 3 GB 2 GB
    2. Unlimited 10 GB Unlimited
    3. VIP 20 GB Unlimited
    4. Business Basic 20 GB Unlimited
    5. Business Unlimited 35 GB Unlimited
    6. Business VIP 50 GB Unlimited

She had the free plan, bought the # 1 premium plan, then upgraded to the # 2 premium plan for 3 years.

More specifically, the "Unlimited" Plan (the # 2 premium plan) says it is for "Our Unlimited Premium Plan is great for entrepreneurs and freelancers with high traffic sites."

Now I see it says you can "Upload up to 1 hour of video with Wix Video." So I think that answers that question of what it means.

10GB of storage should be way more than needed, and unlimited bandwidth is probably like, infinity more than she'll need.

(The # 1 premium plan, Combo, only allowed 3 GB of storage--probably plenty, but 30 video minutes could have been tight, and 2 GB of bandwidth--I suspect that part would have been fine, too.)

    Re: DNS/transferring to domain question

I’d use YouTube for the videos, and also set up a similar site on Rumble or Bit Chute to host them.

Man, I'm out of it. Keith, I've never hurt of Rumble or Bit Chute, but I'll pass that along...
