I keep wanting to take my girlfriend out here and there, and we keep deciding against it for just this reason. Losing Keith drives it home in a big way.
I'm vaxxed with all 3 shots, but I still feel a need to be cautious. Not insulated, but cautious.
People keep asking if I'm back and I haven't really had an answer. But now, yeah, I'm thinkin' I'm back.
Seems like you are being reasonable. Our area has 90-95% vaccination rate (for >12) and all bars/restaurants require proof of vaccination. As such, we feel pretty comfortable and safe based on the risk profile combined with the prevalence of vaccines. We still limit the people we hang out with and sit outdoors when we can, but we don't worry nearly as much as we did back last year or earlier this year.

Folks at Wallgreen tell me that it is a personal preference on how often to get poked. The pharmacist yesterday told me to let the Doc make the recommendation, but she also said that every 2 or 3 years seems to be adequate. I am on a 2 year schedule, but since pneumonia almost killed me in the winter of 2019, I hesitate to push it out any further than that.

Every time I go out I regret it. Nine new covid deaths announced today here in Gallatin County. And some immunized, boostered, younger than me. And with working immune systems which I lack. I am an old man in a bubble. Maintaining social distance from sons, girlfriend, everyone.
Should be playing blackjack with dirty cards, with my sons and smoking strangers in a dive casino in Vegas in December. We all should be. But I will be in the bubble hoping the mask I wear at the grocery and pharmacy is working.
News about Keith has me hiding under the bed, muttering. And I am angry.
You take care of yourself Sky’. Old Merle was wrong, the good times ain’t over for good. And will seem that much brighter when they do come.
Like you I’m still sad some of our friends have gone on and leave some very sad loved ones behind. Most especially Keith at this moment.
He had faith we could all meet again face to face, and I’m going to believe that with him. And I believe it for you all too.

Took GF to birthday dinner with the small group to which I am already exposed, pretty well distanced from everyone else. Not necessarily in love with that but I think OK, and was going to disappoint her mom if we didn't do something at least. Everyone was vaxxed, and we were pretty well away from others.
But still going ot minimize chances.

For the most part we have lived our whole life socially distanced so Covid has not changed a lot for us. We generally avoid most indoor activities, especially during the winter time. If we go out to eat, it is normally at an odd time so there will be less people. We don't attend many kids birthday parties, try to vacation to avoid busy seasons, etc...
Of course, we still do some things to expose ourselves, because you can't stop living. But there are plenty of family first activities to keep us busy and also to minimize exposure.
Prior to Covid and my health issues getting in the way, I went where I wanted to go, and when I wanted to go without considering the environment. Grocery stores, high school athletic events, grade school plays that included my grand youngins, Flora=Bama beaches and hotels and restaurants, local restaurants, and never considered sitting outside unless we had to, hell I even went to Columbus, Ohio and spent the night and ate there, shiver.
The damn Chinese scientists and their bat buddies changed all that.

Thanks kingcat.
I got both pneumonia vaccines and before that was hospitalized with pneumonia in 2011 (it was my leukemia undetected at that time.) . So I recommend those shots at 57.
Shingles was expensive and I didnt get them.
Being vaccinated and if I had an immune system, I would have thought I would be less circumspect. Now, having been in the bubble since late June, I am not sure I am ever going back to what I used to do.
The new (AZ or Pfizer?) pill coming could help.
Comment taken from and WSJ article on Liberals and labor unions abandoning their supporters in the war on vaccination control.
Registered nurse Donna Schmidt, 52, is on unpaid leave from her job at a Long Island-based healthcare system. She has both religious and scientific objections to Covid-19 vaccinations. “I’m not against vaccinations,” she told me. “Traditionally, the Covid-19 vaccine isn’t a vaccine. The CDC changed their definition of a vaccine. It’s truly gene therapy. The mRNA technology has never been used in human beings before.” A self-identified libertarian conservative, Ms. Schmidt says both major political parties have betrayed people like her.

The J&J vaccine is a viral vector vaccine. Scientists began creating viral vectors in the 1970s.
It's been here for decades.

Wow, Mick. My plan D quoted me $248 a shot. I was grateful the pharmacist warned me first.
Getting vaccinated certainly helps but is still no guarantee. This has been the year of the needle. I’ve had three Covid shots, two for Shingles, and one for the flu. I should be bullet proof by now but when you start thinking that is when you usually get shot.

Yep. Flu, pneuma and pneumo, covid, all no or very low cost. I think plan d here in MT is poor.
I am doubly grieved now. Thank you for telling us, KGB.
So all know, and are thanked, This board and thread, has been a primary and excellent source of covid info since Feb 2020 for me and I think for others.. (Thank you dancin Spock) and others.
Been that way Since we learned a nursing home in Washington and some church choir in that state had a new strain of flu killing their members/patrons, and we pondered if we would go to the basketball tournaments! We had no idea how far beyond that trivial pursuit this biological attack would go.
From what I can tell he did not as well, which I sad. This stuff sucks and I really hate to hear those not living life to the fullest due to fear, but I get it. On a lighter not I parked in my garage for the first time in almost two years. We made a makeshift gym when covid started and used it as much as any gym, and I’ve been parking outside ever since. In-laws we’re in for the holidays so I was more motivated than ever to find a task.
New Covid Variant discovered in Africa.
Variant seems to be most heavily mutated so far in outbreak.
The World Health Organization is holding a meeting Friday to discuss the dramatic rise in COVID-19 cases in South Africa that has been blamed on a new variant of the virus.
Joe Phaahla, South Africa’s minister of health, identified the new variant as B.1.1.529, and said it seems highly contagious among young people.
The BBC reported that the new variant seems to be the most heavily mutated so far in the outbreak. James Gallagher, the health correspondent, wrote that one scientist described the variant as "horrific." He said the meeting of the WHO will likely result in the variant receiving a Greek code-name, like the delta variant.
"This variant did surprise us," Tulio de Oliveira, the director of the Center for South Africa’s Epidemic Response and Innovation, told the news outlet. "It has a big jump on evolution [and] many more mutations that we expected."
U.K. Health Secretary Sajid Javid said there were concerns the new variant "may be more transmissible" than the dominant delta strain, and "the vaccines that we currently have may be less effective" against it.

Honestly, this is the first variant that worries me some.
The degree of mutation in the spike protein is far higher than any before. The more worrisome thing is in the past, those with high numbers of mutations compromised the virus's ability to spread. This virus seems to spread just as well or better than Delta. We should know within the next few weeks whether the virus can evade the vaccines and it's degree of severity.
One more thing, this variant is likely already pretty well spread. It would not surprise me if it is already present in the USA. It is certainly already in Europe and the Middle East (we will likely see stories coming out about this in the coming few days).
