    My daughter's Jan Term Class

Unfortunately, due to covid she is not going to get to travel as she had planned. She was fortunate to go to Ireland last year and Greece the year before, but I think I'm more excited about what she's doing this year.

"Zen and the Art of Auto Maintenance."

Automobile maintenance, home repair, first aid, basic survival/cooking skills and how to make do when you don’t have.

I think a course like that should be mandatory for every college kid.

Unless they learned it before going to college.

In my household? I was just wondering if I could enroll as a distance learner!

Having said that, auto maintenance back in my day was a lot easier than it is now. I wouldn’t know where to begin under a hood today.

My senior year in high school, we had six week mini courses you could take if you had completed all your credit hours and highest level of courses offered. Some of them included:
    Wilderness Survival
    Bachelor Survival
    Horticulture
    Auto Mechanics

    ...to name a few.

When I was in middle school we had this thing called shop class, it was great. We worked with woods and metals. Forged our own chisels and screwdrivers, made toolboxes, etc. At 14 we missed most of January and February for snow. Dad was laid up with a broken leg and Mon didn’t get off work until 6:00 so I learned to cook. At 15 I spent summer vacation helping my Dad and brother in law build our new house, I learned a lot about carpentry and wiring that summer. Later that same year I rebuilt a Chevy 350 engine for my uncle, then dropped it into his ‘69 Chevy truck. I’ve always done most of my own auto maintenance on the usual things. The last few years I have started using the mechanics more due to convenience, and if I needed advanced diagnostics.

The more you can do for yourself the better off you are.

I learned most of that stuff at home. From my parents and grandparents.

It’s shocking how many people can’t do anything.

    LOL.

OK, I have to complete the story.

So after the spare tire is put on the car, the professor asks her if she's taking the car anywhere this weekend. She happened to have a job in her career field today out of town, about 60 miles, so he told her he better check the lug nuts for her. He tightened them a little more, and she thanked him, and started on her way.

As the car lurched, she panicked and stopped the car, and got out yelling at the professor.

"Professor, I broke the car," she said. "I did something to it when I changed the tire."

He calmly came to her and asked what was wrong. She told him.

"Did you put the emergency brake on when you changed the tire," he asked?

    Yes, she responded.

"Did you take the emergency brake off when you started to leave," he asked?

    ....

Yes, I know I failed as a parent.

Not sure I am an all-star parent. My 4 year old still thinks she is a puppy... However, I think she will be the one more likely to be able to change a tire.

She changed her oil yesterday. Said she came out "all gross" from underneath the car, but changed the oil.

My daughter did that a summer ago, and soon realized why I pay to have the job done now.

Has she done wiper blades yet? I need new ones she could maybe practice on.
