Who is they??? No, that is not what the polls had.
RCP average had Biden 0.9 in Florida.
    Had Trump +1 in Ohio.

I hope it says a lot of Americans still believe in individual liberty and economic opportunity over socialism and equality of outcomes. So much so they are willing to hold their nose and vote for a person with the personal appeal of a bastard son at a family reunion. Outside of a very small core it sure isn't b/c of his personal magnetism.

Ha. Biden is going to win. Its much closer than it should have been but he will. Its looking like he will squeak one out in Georgia and win Michigan, Wisconsin and we wait on PA. But Biden doesn't need Georgia or PA at this point. Winning AZ and NE-2 was huge.

GOP going to hold the Senate is as big as winning the White House IMO. It in essence prevents the packing of the SCOTUS. And good luck with any other radical agenda like the Green New Boondoggle, medicare for all, etc

From a GOP perspective, I agree it’s a huge deal.

From an American's point of view, it is huge. From somebody who wants to fundamentally change this nation, it is also a huge deal for the negative. It's why the founding fathers put in Checks and Balances.

They won’t be able to prevent the executive orders that will change all the Trump executive orders that helped free up the economy.

Agree...but in 4 years there is another election, and expect the economy (or lack there of) to be the issue. Of course the liberals will blame Trump for the COVID dive.

    Re: Election results threads

The polls are proving to have been much less accurate than one might think at first blush. The predicted blue wave falls well short of occurring.

Polling indicated the senate would flip. It’s not going to happen.

Early in the evening it was called that the House would remain in the hands of the Dems and they would add 17 seats. On Monday Cook claimed they would add 15 seats. It now appears they will lose 10 seats according to the RCP forecast based on incoming results. The GOP needed 17 seats to change hands to flip the House, gaining ten of those means the House now has a razor thin Dem majority. If Biden does indeed win the election and historical trends hold the GOP will reclaim the House in 2022.

The most clear thing to come out of the election is that some states need to do a lot of work to clean up their voting procedures and laws.

People expecting a miracle from Biden on COVID are also going to be really disappointed.

You mean wearing a mask, shutting the economy and hiding in the basement won't defeat a virus? Of course hiding in a basement is clearly a trait of a strong leader

As Doc said, ought to be a huge deal for anyone who cares about checks and balances and the tyranny of the majority.

Though I get the sense many who think they are in the national majority no longer care about tyranny, so long as they are the tyrants.

And while tyranny is a strong word, it is exactly the word used by the Founders, and is exactly why we have this convoluted system, to prevent exactly what Schumer was threatening to do.

Many tried. Florida did this right. They count all of their mail in/absentee ballots ahead of time. Therefore, when they release their results they release all of them at once (same day and early). That is how it should be done everywhere.
Especially in a pandemic when it was obvious there would be a massive amount of early voting.

Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin all tried to change this and their legislatures (Republican) wouldn't allow it. It was a mistake then and its a mistake now.

    Re: Election results threads

I am very curious to see how this plays out on the Republican side. Trump is clearly (based on his tweets and past) not going to handle losing well. And he's foreshadowed that he would challenge the results in court if he lost.
The question is at what point do other Republicans come out publicly and repudiate that. Chris Christie did that last night. Mitch actually hinted at it a bit this morning. But, for the sake of all of us I hope they do.
It will also be curious to see what his supporters do...as this drags on into the night I suspect you will see a lot less, "Glad we at least we won the Senate posts on social media (because they know Trump lost)" and a lot more "They are cheating!!!!" posts. I hope that isn't the case but I suspect that is what will happen.

Meanwhile...Trump gets exactly what he wants out of this...a controversy. He wanted it in 2016 when he thought he was going to lose and he's getting it now. Both times he was likely to to turn that turnout into a news network (I'm not kidding and posted this 4 years ago). Trump TV is more likely now than ever (unless he decides he is going to run again in 2024).

Quinnipiac had Biden +4 in Ohio. Their polling was awful, as was CNBC, Reuters, YouGov, etc. Missing races by 8 points or more is terrible.

You said Trafalgar was an outlier, but they were one of the more accurate pollsters.

Perhaps both sides realize compromise is the only way forward. I think the American people on both sides of the election have given politicians something to think about. Fear of both sacrificing our nation for partisanship as a threat to both sides. Neither will come out intact without the other. In Disagreement we can find the appropriate compromise...but divided we will all fall.

“Before I leave I’d like to see our politics begin to return to the purposes and practices that distinguish our history from the history of other nations,
“I would like to see us recover our sense that we are more alike than different. We are citizens of a republic made of shared ideals forged in a new world to replace the tribal enmities that tormented the old one. Even in times of political turmoil such as these, we share that awesome heritage and the responsibility to embrace it.”

A lot of the changes that were proposed would lead to more chaos. The worst time to fix election issues is in the midst of the election.

I think what we are seeing is that the division is less among the parties than it is cultural differences in the electorate. You have the big cities in one corner and the rest of America in the other.

We shall see when its all said and done. In general, National polls are usually within a point or two and state polls are typically scattered.
No polls predicted a "blue wave". That was all punditry (and frankly I didn't hear hardly any of that...that was just hope by some). Almost every single pollster and forecaster I saw knew these states would be very close.

The electoral map is changing and for political science junkies that is fun. The upper midwest has been in play two elections in a row for Republicans. That is big for them.
Texas, North Carolina and Georgia are moving towards purple. That is big for them.

And of course we have our standard, every election toss ups in Arizona, Florida and Ohio.

Trafalgar also missed on several as well. Going through and picking out random polls who miss is easy. As I've said many times...that is why averages of polls is so important.

when in doubt blame the republicans. Tried and true technique that seems to work. So much for not being divisive
