Minneapolis police choke suspect.... free stuff at target!

So the police in Minneapolis choke and kill a suspect who is in handcuffs...and hopefully they will be punished to the full extent of the law, assuming the video accurately portrays the situation.

As a result, Target unwittingly opens it doors, courtesy of local thugs, and gives away free TV's, diapers, computers, or whatever you can carry

You can't defend the untenable actions of the police officers. It makes you wonder what training programs that police organization has in place. The investigation needs to go far beyond the four officers who were fired. No reputable police department would teach or tolerate such tactics. The three officers who looked on obviously didn't think anything was wrong with the fourth officer's tactics. That's the real problem. Why did they believe the prolonged pressure to the neck was appropriate?

Unimaginable they would do that when the guy was already cuffed, and apparently the arrest was for passing a counterfeit bill.

I don't know if he struggled and fought them, etc., I haven't looked into it, but clearly putting your knee/leg on someone's neck for minutes is just not something you can defend.

Of course the response, rioting and looting, isn't defendable either. So now you have armed citizens trying to guard things b/c the cops won't leave their precinct buildings for fear of a bigger response. They won't even try to stop looting.

Re: Minneapolis police choke suspect.... free stuff at target!

I know numerous people in law enforcement, including my daughter and son in law. I'm sure most folks know LEO as well. The profession tends to attract or create people who are "alpha dogs", authoritarians and / or bullies. Every profession attracts a certain type of person, and the nature of the profession is one where trusting people can get you killed. They deal with criminals by the very nature of their jobs. That has to make them somewhat cynical. Of course that does not give them the authority to kill a person. To me, this appeared as if the officer was applying his own form of justice. He was not just arresting the guy but also doling out punishment. He didn't know when to quit.... But as bad were the other 3 officers who did nothing. Any one of the three could have, and should have smacked the officer in control. And I feel for those who witnessed it and were able to do nothing. At what point does a by standing citizen step in... and what do you do? Do you confront the officer and risk arrest or worse? Maybe its you that ends up on the ground with a leg across your throat.

For me this is neither racial or political. I tend to not jump on the race bandwagon as I have seen black officers use excessive force as well as white criminals be subjected to over aggression. Sure, it happens more to African Americans but then crime is more prevalent in urban communities. I have also seen how minorities treat the police. That should not be taken as an excuse for the inexcusable actions by the Minnneapolis police officers.

Of course the rioting and looting is a whole different story. I am all for the citizens calling out the police on this but also for a full/complete investigation by the appropriate authorities (NOT the Minneapolis police dept) where guilt and punishment come at the end of the investigation. To me looting is moronic. Something happens so that give people the right to destroy and rob?? In a way it exemplifies the issue law enforcement has. Its almost a justification of the aggressiveness of the police that when people don't like something they suddenly feel the right to rob and loot. Law abiding people do not do that. And I sure don't get the philosophy of I'm pissed about something so lets destroy my neighborhood. There are lots of things done that I disagree with and my early reaction is not to bust out the window of my local Target and steal a 70 inch TV.

Ellison has been long affiliated with Nation of Islam. he was seen as radical even for the DNC Chairmanship. Nation of Islam is simply the black equivalent of the Klan and is shockingly anti-semetic. Anyone affiliated with them is deeply suspect.

It's small wonder they aren't doing anything to crack down on excesses.
