The drug was developed by a research team at University of Alabama at Birmingham The team includes researchers at several hospitals, among them Emory, Vanderbilt, and Wash U. It is also being tested at UAB Hospitals and is indeed showing promising signs.

Results are in from some patient trials and it sounds good.

Early peek at data on Gilead coronavirus drug suggests patients are responding to treatment

    From the article:
"The University of Chicago Medicine recruited 125 people with Covid-19 into Gilead’s two Phase 3 clinical trials. Of those people, 113 had severe disease. All the patients have been treated with daily infusions of remdesivir.

“The best news is that most of our patients have already been discharged, which is great. We’ve only had two patients perish,” said Kathleen Mullane, the University of Chicago infectious disease specialist overseeing the remdesivir studies for the hospital. "

Gilead Sciences who will market the drug had their stock surge 10% in afterhours trading today. Somebody believes it will work.

And 2 days ago I'm sure numerous congresspeople bought lots of that stock, just a coincidence.

One of my financial managers went on a shopping spree today. Had some "stop loss orders" in January and started some small sleeves in technology to recoup.

Technology will lead us out of this mess. I was fortunate that one of my investments exercised a call option in February. I had as much money in cash as I have ever had in my life in the last two months. It doesn’t make up for what Has been devalued, but it gives me a nice cushion to tide me over a few years and take advantage of some good bargains. It beats sitting around waiting for Pelosi to pass legislation to get me a check.

    Ha. Sad but true.

I’m very glad this is looking good. And I agree with others, Science will lead us out of this.

We have the best minds in the world on it. Bill Gates is funding the production of 16 different vaccines which is just amazing.
Meaning, he will fund ALL of their production while they are being tested in hopes that just one works. Will save us months if not years.

It's the least he can do since I've spent about 10 years of manhours working around the bugs in his software they relabel as "features".

Back in the 90's Bill Gates came to ATL. On his agenda was a meeting with my long time boss and friend. I asked Rick how the meeting went. He said, "you remember that nerdy little kid that sat in back of you in third grade and picked buggers? That's who I met with." He wasn't a MicroSoft fan.

I am very fortunate. It's only one of two times I have invested in anything callable and the only time called. I knew the call deadline was approaching in February, but didn't believe the company would pull the trigger. So, when they did I wasn't prepared to do anything. And with market valuations it looked pretty scary to buy anything too quickly. So cash got a little high. The challenge now is I have to figure how much cash I need for the next two years to avoid being in a forced sell position for living expenses and hope over the next two years the market moves to values near 85-90% of the valuations before Covid 19. When that happens I'll declare victory. But, it is nice to buy a few things right now. There are some great bargains. I wish I had invested in Gilead Sciences two days ago when I first read about the research. I believe they are a winner!

I think by fall we'll have the ability to treat the virus early and save many of the lives we are otherwise losing.

This turned out to be very good news.

Remdesivir is the most promising drug so far for helping to treat infected patients. I have been following this one closely and it shows true promise unlike hydroxychloroquine/azithromycin/zinc. It exploits the biggest flaw in retroviruses (the fact that the human body doesn't need to reverse transcript RNA ever). It would not surprise me if more well targeted forms of this drug are being investigated right now, since this one was designed to target reverse transcriptase in ebola.

So if we get Covid19 we should shoot ourselves as a cure? OK, got it. Where should we aim?

UAB is awaiting permission to move to stage2 testing of Remdesiviir. It is expected anytime. Stage 2 will last 3 months and will be tested against remdesivir + an anti-viral. As soon as permission is granted UAB will coordinate testing with hospitals across the country.

    Not the best of news..

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/comp...cid=spartandhp

"The clinical trial looked at hospitalized Covid-19 patients who had more moderate disease, with pneumonia but who didn’t have reduced oxygen levels at the beginning of the study. Patients were randomly assigned to get five days of remdesivir, 10 days of remdesivir, or the standard of care, and then evaluated on a 7-point scale.
Overall, the differences were quite modest. The patents who received five days of remdesivir did best, with 76% improving by at least one point by day 11, compared to 66% who received standard of care.
But confusingly, patients who stayed on remdesivir for 10 days did slightly worse than those who received five days of remdesivir, with only 70% of them improving at day 11. That difference wasn’t statistically significant compared to the standard of care group"

“Before I leave I’d like to see our politics begin to return to the purposes and practices that distinguish our history from the history of other nations,
“I would like to see us recover our sense that we are more alike than different. We are citizens of a republic made of shared ideals forged in a new world to replace the tribal enmities that tormented the old one.
