    2020 Football Season?

Obviously, none of us can accurately predict the future, but what are your thoughts: Full uninterrupted season, no season, limited season, etc. It would be a cruel twist of fate that we approach the 2020 season with perhaps the most talented and deep roster in my 71 years and it could be limited or even cancelled?!

Football season is 6 months away so hopefully by that time things will be under control.
But if I had to guess today there will not be a season.

    This.

It's too big of a risk and too easy to cut. Economically it's nothing compared to shuttering every small business in America, and it has huge crowds of people sitting in each other's laps.

Even if we get the infection rate under control it will be some time before we either vaccinate enough people and enough people get it to have a basic herd immunity, and I dont' see sports coming back until that point. Businesses will open, the economy will rebound, but sports are such a gathering point they will be the last thing we bring back.
People keep asking if I'm back and I haven't really had an answer. But now, yeah, I'm thinkin' I'm back.

Hearing President Trump and the task force, looks like we're going to get back to work soon. We have to or we won't have a country. We're tracking 50,000 deaths with the flu, are we going to shut things down because of the flu?

Sorry, didn't give my prediction: Per usual I'm on the optimistic side and I believe with maybe some tweaks we will have a football season. I believe we will have a treatment where the mortality rate will be next to zero, especially for college age people. Football is the nation's favorite sport like baseball was in WW2. Baseball was not interrupted then as stopping it would be disastrous for the nation. I know it's a different situation but the same logic applies here

I wouldn't know where to start (including the fact that Trump hasn't said any such thing, just hoping the 15 day thing puts us on the right track).

I might suggest that, to keep things apples to apples, had the playing of baseball allowed German U boats to better target US supply ships, we would not have played much baseball. Slightly obtuse analogy, but hopefully still a sound one.

I am okay with football being cancelled. I just want basketball (Kentucky's favorite sport) to start on time.

What? First of all, are you talking about influenza or the corona virus that causes covid-19? Second, never mind.

What if they don't get to practice until September?

Yeah, there’s definitely going to have to be considerations for physical readiness and conditioning for the players not to mention time required to properly prepare for competition. The strides made by China in particular towards a vaccine are encouraging, but 6 months seems to be the most optimistic timeframe for having a demonstrably effective one in place and then there are the production and logistics hurdles to overcome.

As we allocate more resources and retask existing facilities to addressing the critical needs to address this crisis I could see that timeline reduced potentially, but the ability to manage it in the near term requires drastic measures that have to be followed by all to be successful. It was encouraging to see the UK lock it down today, but discouraging to see my state, GA, only apply minimal restrictions going against the advice of the specialists at Emory.

That’s going somewhat off on a tangent, but I do believe there’s some truth, particularly in the south, to the thought that if you told the people strict adherence to the guidelines put in place would save the college football season you’d get a much higher rate of compliance. Tuscaloosa or Athens might actually be the model for the rest of the country. 😎

All I know is that I watched something called Combat Juggling for a few minutes flipping through the sports channels the other day. It made more committed than ever to do whatever it takes to not be subjected to the likes of that as the only viable sports available.

We have a vaccine for the flu but we are projecting 50, 000 deaths in the US this year. Maybe we should be having the lockdown for the flu?

Do you really want to go there?

But before we do, what is an acceptable amount of deaths you're willing to accept? How about those that can end up with long-term issues? 100,000 dead? 1 million with long term health issues? All so you can watch football this season?

This isn't the flu. We have no idea how it spreads. There is no treatment except rest. There is no vaccine, unlike the flu where only about 60% of Americans get a vaccine. Maybe that will change in the future and we can reduce the number of deaths. We don't know why men are more likely to die than women. We don't know if children have some sort of immunity but are carriers. There is so much unknown. There are reasonable estimates that show that without precaution that half the country can get the virus, maybe more. It is IMPOSSIBLE to treat those people. It is impossible to treat the number of people that will get it in a month. Think about that. The seasonal flu doesn't have those issues. Those deaths are mostly a byproduct of people choosing not to get vaccinated.

What we do know is that social distancing works to flatten the curve, and we know that even with social distancing being practiced that the virus will spread. So while we know nothing, you are going to ask young adults, who are not getting paid, to risk their well being completely based off uncertainty, so you can be entertained?

I fully trust the doctors in this world will get a vaccine for this.. This is Covid-19, so the coronavirus has actually been around a very long time right right?

It's named that because it was first detected in 2019. There have been other coronaviruses but this one is 'novel', in that it is entirely new to humans.

Olympics cancelled, we'll see how things go. But to sit here and proclaim we won't have a season at this point is premature. Funny, some say they ignore my posts that have been replying on them for years. Jack wouldn't have anything to say if he couldn't ridicule me everyday. Re: 2020 Football Season?

Maybe this will end up being a natural selection thing.

People who follow science will survive.

People who follow ... other things ... will not.

If you feel comfortable going "back to normal" in less than a week, hey, I guess you've chosen your side.

    **

Some said that we won't get back to normal until we have a vaccine. I slightly disagree, though I acknowledge that would hugely impactful. I actually think we could have a college football season if: (1) we had widespread testing that allowed us to confirm that a large group of people (read: UK football team/coaches) all tested negative for the virus, and (2) those players/coaches would basically have to commit to living together and not seeing others during the season (to reduce the risk of reinfection).

Definitely don't think you can count on stadiums full of people-- more likely that we can make it safe for 100-150 players/coaches on each sideline than for any amount of fans in the stands.

    Re: 2020 Football Season?

I don’t think we will get back to what you call normal anytime soon. We also don’t know if this virus will be here in the fall/winter. We don’t know why this doesn’t affect children. We don’t know if it’s going to affect 80% of 327 million. I think most states have done a good job of social distancing. I think they will have to really isolate NY.. we have more test, which means more positive results. I think China put the world in this situation.

Here is what I will say, our country will get desperate and it will be very soon. If sports has to be put on hold till they feel comfortable, so be it. Other industries they will never recover from this. And I’m not talking the travel Industry, I’m talking the nursing homes , mom and pop manufacturing industries..We also can’t live in fear or isolate until their is a vaccine. If we wait for a vaccine to start being normal, that scares me more than the virus itself.

If left to the Medical Community we could all be locked in our residences for a year or so. If that happens of course, we won't have a country anymore that we can recognize. Thousands of young men didn't die for our country to throw it away. The most knowledgeable folks both medical and economic will be advising our leaders on upcoming decisions. May God lend his infinite wisdom.

I am amazed that a man of your age can make such post as you do.
You have made and still make comments that are in nature have racist over tones but to you are natural and I understand with you growing up in Baghdad.
You believing you are the only one that knows or understands football and trying to force football as if you are some insider with great knowledge is laughable.
Then this there where football is more important than the health and safety of everyone just shows how narrow minded you are.
No knows anything but you and if your comments are questioned you take offense.
My issue with you started with you everyday criticism of Steven Johnson and you ding support for your homeboy Barker day after day.
Johnson is the one to move UK football to the position they are in today.
