    Re: Coronavirus

“A huge part of not causing a panic is being forthright and correct in your public assessments”

That is a huge part of being a responsible elected public servant. Nobody I see in DC is. A pox on both their houses and frankly, the people who vote Pelosi or Biden or Clinton in. They only seek money and power. Trump seeks vainglory. His election was a reaction to the people using their elected position to enrich themselves and their relatives at the public’s expense. “Public servant” is a laughable anachronism, sadly.

    Doesn't surprise me a bit.

This is btw what socialist medicine looks like, and we're already so close to it there's almost no distinction. Did anyone expect the CDC to be efficient and well run?

Guys it's a government bureaucracy like any other. It will take them 3 months to get bids to put in the phone lines and 3 more months to make a decision.

That's the problem with the testing kits.

And that's not on Trump, or anyone else we actually elect.

AFAIK the only way around it is for Trump to declare a state of emergency so he can blow up those procedures and get private companies to work on the problem. But even the private health companies are massive bureaucracies that are near government level in their paperwork.

It's very concerning so I'm not dismissing it, but it's far from surprising and certainly isn't a political problem. it's a government problem.
People keep asking if I'm back and I haven't really had an answer. But now, yeah, I'm thinkin' I'm back.

^This is why I expect this to go unchecked. I'm not running around saying "WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!11!1!" but I fully expect to be exposed, as will everyone.

    Re: Coronavirus

Oh, I don't expect them to really make a defense of this either. I'm planning for how to respond WHEN it becomes widespread.

But I'd be planning on that regardless who is in the Oval Office. This is relatively sprawling bureaucracy and flawed humans fighting a force of nature. Usually we survive but Mother Nature also usually has her way.

That being said, the idea we're all gonna die seems false too if China is any indication. It didn't follow an exponential unchecked path there despite massive infection. Given their population density we should see tens if not 100s of thousands of deaths by now and while I think the Chinese are probably lying about the problem I doubt it's that much of a lie.

BEvans, that post highlights the problem. The US system is very decentralized by its nature. It's ideal for preserving freedom, not so much for action.

Dictatorships are almost always better at efficiently moving government resources and taking action, holding the economic level of development equal among comparisons.

Ironically for all those who think Trump is plotting to become dictator, this is one time they need to hope he does b/c the best thing we could do is declare a state of emergency and go to every governor and insist on X Y and Z protocols, and have Congress legislate emergency powers to do so or the states lose all their funding.

This is basically what’s happening in Japan for the last four weeks. Some say this is why the number of those infected has not gone up like South Korea, Iran or Italy and I tend to agree.

What I do to protect myself and my fam and others are frequent hand washing, sanitizing, and wearing mask. I try not to hold or touch anything shared in public, unconsciously touch my face, or go to the crowded places among others. I would have to say wearing eyeglasses would help reduce the risk of getting splash or spray directly into your eye by any accident. Heard all the members of a family in the center of Wuhan survived doing these plus washing face, head, hair and body immediately after they came back from outside.

I keep hearing wearing mask will not keep you from getting infected but I believe they say that to save it for those who need it in the medical systems. That helps not to spread, no doubt.

I try to avoid confined space, especially without ventilation. I also sanitize my iPhones when I come back from outside.

I know most of you already known these. Listing these ONLY IF this helps.

    Coronavirus

It appears there are two strains of the new Coronavirus (designated L and S). S is the ancestral strain from which L evolved, S evolved from a SARS-related Corona virus found in bats. L appears to be possibly be more virulent. Interestingly, when the disease initially broke out in Wuhan almost all cases were L-type, now it is less than 70%. This might be due to selective pressures from government intervention targeting more virulent cases.

    The source:
    https://academic.oup.com/nsr/advance...waa036/5775463

This is a very well done but very technical article. They look into genetic compassion comparison to other related viruses, potential sources, etc. The goal being to look at where the virus evolved from and where it might evolved to in the future. During this work they discovered the two strains.

Ugh. This is just so stupid.

“This came unexpectedly, it came out of China, we closed it down, we stopped it, it was a very early shut down,” he [Trump] told reporters this morning. Trump’s chief economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, declared on CNBC, “I would still argue to you that this thing is contained.”

You may not agree or like it, but he's not alone in that view. Entire nations have refused port of call for ships with the same circumstances.

His hyperbole is at least consistent. He applies it to everything.

I worry about the actual response, and people losing their minds making it worse. His tweets etc. are pretty meaningless. I'm not happy about that, but after 3 years I'm not holding my breath. For the first couple of months after he became POTUS I held out hope, but not now.

Keith is right, it's around now b/c it takes so long to show symptoms and is still contagious.

I've started working on washing my hands diligently and keeping them off my face. I never realized how much I do that.

At my church we do a Saturday breakfast where we cook eggs/sausage/biscuits/gravy and a bunch of us old guys watch a bible study video and talk about it. Something like that makes you realize how many different ways we could transmit something.

I’m sad this made me laugh. Haha

Btw, I know others here know Doc, but if you haven’t met him he has one of the driest, most sarcastic senses of humor you will ever meet.
Not sure how that comes across if you don’t know him but boy is it funny to me.
If anyone wonders how people with different political viewpoints can get along: UK and laughter (and alcohol). That will do it.

Went to dinner this evening with daughter and SIL. As my SIL was walking the dog before leaving for dinner his neighbor across the street called to him. His daughter was self quarantined in their house. She just was sent home from her exchange studies in Italy. She was among several students at Berry College who had their study program cancelled.

    Re: Coronavirus

I just want to summarize some of the quotes from President Trump during this crisis and then ask a legit question about it:

“the 15 (cases of Coronavirus), within a couple of days, is going to be down to close to zero. That’s a pretty good job we’ve done.”

When asked about school's having preparedness plans just in case they need to shut down:
“I don’t think it’s going to come to that, especially with the fact that we’re going down, not up,” he said. “We’re going very substantially down, not up.”

"Low Ratings Fake News MSDNC (Comcast)
    &
@CNN are doing everything possible to make the Caronavirus (his misspelling not mine) look as bad as possible, including panicking markets, if possible. Likewise their incompetent Do Nothing Democrat comrades are all talk, no action. USA in great shape!"

"The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!"

“This came unexpectedly, it came out of China, we closed it down, we stopped it, it was a very early shut down,” he [Trump] told reporters this morning. Trump’s chief economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, declared on CNBC, “I would still argue to you that this thing is contained.”

"I like the numbers being where they are. I don't need to have the numbers double because of one ship" -- Trump explains that he doesn't want to let people off the Grand Princess cruise ship because he doesn't want the number of coronavirus cases in the country to go up.

"The Fake News Media and their partner, the Democrat Party, is doing everything within its semi-considerable power (it used to be greater!) to inflame the CoronaVirus situation, far beyond what the facts would warrant. Surgeon General, “The risk is low to the average American.”

"So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!"

I have stated on here several times that I think these quotes do a disservice to our country. They have not "stopped a panic" but instead done the opposite. As people have realized how serious this is, they see their President lying, or at the very least politically spinning this issue.
So my question is not one of leadership (as I have made my viewpoint clear) but is instead a political one: Is what Trump is doing politically wise?

He clearly thinks so. There is no way you can read those statements and not think they are not politically motivated. As Chuck said in this thread, everything politicians say is political.
But I just think this is a political disaster for him. He and Fox News can say all day long that its "Fake News" and that CNN, etc is spreading fear. But the fact is that a tiny % of Americans watch those news outlets. Or read the newspaper, etc.
Americans are not stupid. They can see what he is doing and its transparently obvious. He doesn't seem like a leader right now. He seems like someone who is desperately trying to hold on to his job.
How can you keep talking about how many people the flu kills every year and downplaying this. We aren't stupid. THIS IS NEW. Its more contagious and is far more deadly. And we have no vaccine or flu shot for it yet. That is the concern.
And you can't blame the fake news for the story and then see Northern Italy on Lockdown. Japan canceling school. China on lockdown. Etc etc.
Are they all doing that to hurt Trump also? Is this a massive global conspiracy to get him out of office? I think not. And no sane person thinks that either.
This is simply a political disaster for him.
I know he doesn't listen to many around him, but surely one of his strategists told him, "Mr. President, this is going to spread like crazy and get really bad. So let's not be on the record saying "We have stopped it. It will disappear. The flu is worse, etc. Let's just lead and inform people and do everything we can do."

At what point do sporting events get shut down. Schools get shut down. Trains and air get shut down. Cruises get shut down. People home from work, etc. And he's still on twitter blaming the fake news for it all. Politically speaking, this is just a disaster.
And today of course, once again the stock market is plunging. Not just here, globally.
This isn't a conspiracy to get rid of Trump. Its a pandemic that he needs to lead our country through. And Imo, if he is not re-elected, he will have no one to blame but himself.
9/11 and W's response to it got him re-elected in 2004 (then WMD's and Iraq lost Republicans the next election).
Trump's reaction and response to this has been so poor, it may very well cost him an election I think he has been the favorite for. This isn't going away in weeks. The effects of it will go on for months and well into voting season.
