Need a historian or a good Googlavillian re: Cuba, circa 1996

Had a discussion the other day with somebody and I mentioned that when I flew over Cuba in route to Grand Cayman in 1996, we were prohibited from taking photographs as we passed over Cuba. I know I remember that correctly, but I am told US Airlines had no such restrictions in that time range.

I did a quick search to locate some internet verification, but to no avail.

Anyone help me out? Or am I just remembering incorrectly?

Could be you were being escorted by military jets. From what I read that was not uncommon even on permitted flyovers.

Were you informed before or during the flight?

I flew from Atlanta to Montego Bay in April of ‘98 on Jamaica Air? I’m not sure but it was some Jamaican airline. Anyway, I don’t remember being told anything like that. Maybe Fidel wasn’t worried about the Jamaicans.

During the flight, as I recall. May have been told beforehand, but I recall the pilot admonition as we approached Cuba.

Not saying I doubt what you are saying, it was probably some stipulation that Cuba made for allowing commercial flights in their air space.

Seems like it wouldn’t really matter considering we have satellites that can read your shirt size on the back of your shirt while orbiting in space.

That's what I recall thinking... Like my consumer camera at 30,000 feet or whatever was really going to do something we couldn't already do.

I sure wish somebody could verify this. About to drive me crazy. It's a short trip, anyway.

If it was during flight I would guess it was particular to that flight.

I read a discussion earlier (After reading this post) from twenty years ago about Cuba flyovers. They were discussing how they were allowed for larger airline passenger planes, but seemed to say ofttimes they were more regulated than others. And that smaller craft were often denied permission.
And then another poster mentioned being escorted by military jets at times.

I was thinking if that were the case, or even a concern.. a pilot would naturally order no photos that might serve to antagonize a Cuban military pilot.

    Just a thought.

It may have been just that pilot, that flight, etc., but I really was thinking it was more. Maybe I misremembered.

If it were me, I’d likely misremember if it was 1976, but not likely in 1996.
