It's a political narrative people use to gain power, and far too many don't see through it.

This is as old as politics itself, dividing people and creating enemies of those who are not enemies. Most notably in modern history the Nazis making enemies of Jews and others, but at a more subtle level we see it throughout history including American history. The Tracy/Hepburn movie "State of the Union" explores the politics of "getting out the X vote" and forces the candidate to change from a common man wanting to do good to someone saying what needs to be said to 'deliver the vote'.

That's all this is, and it happens over and over again and people fall for it over and over again. It's like negative campaign ads. Everyone complains about them but they are used b/c they WORK, and work well. People keep falling for them.

Obama was weaned on that kind of politics. Small wonder he embraces it while paying lip service to unity.
