    Pulled a “Darrell” This Evening

Well, I wasn’t jogging and tripped over a twig and broke my thumb or anything... but something equally bizarre.

Figured I’d rake of some of the winter leaves up so I could get some pre emergence fertilizer down. I chose to rake rather than use the blower for some bonus exercise. I was pushing the big green garbage can around with the lid open picking up piles of leaves, the wheel got stuck causing the can to tilt back, my momentum pushed me forward causing me to step on the lid. When I stepped on the lid it caused the garbage can fall backwards knocking me down. As I was falling the top edge of the garbage can hit me in the side of the head/ear throwing me to the ground on my back.

After I got my wits back I figured I was done for the evening as it was getting dark. I finished picking up the piles of leaves, rolled the can to the curb, and put my rake away... which is when I noticed the blood running down my face. I went in and got some cold water on it and to get a look with a couple of mirrors. It looked like it went through the cartilage leaving a pretty good gash. MS. boss was a little shaken after looking at my ear and suggested I go to the ER (ear repair).

Turns out after the NP examined me, the top edge of garbage can did slice through the cartilage... I’m currently waiting for them to come back and “put the cartilage back together and sow it all back together” (her words). I feel like I’m in for some torturous pain here in the next few minutes.

    Prayers and luck please!!!

Oh my... Blueboss, I confess to laughing as I was reading it until I saw you're really hurt, and I apologize now for my laughing. You indeed have my thoughts and prayers as they put you back together, as well as Mrs. C's, to whom I was reading this until learning you were really hurt.

No apologies necessary, I bet if someone had seen the whole thing it would have been three stoogesesque, only I was the only stooge. In fact, when I got my wits back together and got up, I looked around to see if any neighbors had seen my abbreviated rendition of Cirque Du Soleil a’la gargbag’e la’can.

I’m back together now, the local to numb it was tough sled’n. They tried to go all around the wound to get it numb, but in the end they had to go directly to the wound....cringe. Basically, now the whole right side of my head is numb... weird.

They reconnected the cartilage with four sutures on the inside, and wrapped it all up with six more on the outside.

Now I’m going to have PTGCSD and will require therapy to take the trash out. Probably have nightmares with big green garbage cans chasing me around.

Next time I’m using garbage bags...

It does sound like a great way to get out of trash duty.

glad you're back together, hesitant to say glad you're OK after that ordeal b/c sure wasn't fun.

And yes that was oddly Darrellesque. But like that great David Allen Coe song opines, it was not perfectly Darrellesque b/c it didn't happen in a Wal Mart, you didn't spend an hour explaining to the ER desk that it was your ear and not a toe that needed help, and there was no technology involved other than the garbage can.

But still a great rendition nonetheless. If you'd done it slipping on a Palm Pilot in a Wal Mart then you'd be 10 of 10.

Seriously, glad they were able to patch you up.
People keep asking if I'm back and I haven't really had an answer. But now, yeah, I'm thinkin' I'm back.

Your wife was very astute to send you to the Ear Repair.

Ugh....cartilage is slow to heal but ears heal well. Scars are hard to see. Took half my ear off in a car wreck my fresh year at UK. That was the least of my worries, but they sewed it back on, and it still works

    Best of luck.

    Sorry to hear (oops) that.

    I hope “pulling a Darrell” isn’t contagious.

    Get well soon

You might want to ask Darrell if there is claim you can file with the Garbage can manufacturer. Was there a warning on the can advising you the can could become stuck on soft ground causing a trip hazard? Was there a warning that the can edges could cause bodily harm? That mega law firm on TV could probably get you $500 k. I bet Darrell could write a brief that would cause the insurance company to wish you had hired M&M instead of Him.

I was thinking that very thing, at the least it should have a warning label warning not to move while lid is open.

It also should be noted that the city provided the garbage cans. Originally Caesar’s Casino funded the garbage cans.

Minneapolis just settled a suit for $27M. New Albany may have some money squirreled away.

After it happened and I got up in the yard, I looked around out of embarrassment to see if anyone saw the whole thing. I have a city council member that lives across the street, he was out of town.

City Council member? For the right price, I'm sure he's a reliable witness!

Still pretty swollen and bruised hurts like a sum-bits.

For Darrell, the stuff around the ear is hair.

If I whack my ear, will I get hair too? May be worth it...

Easy now, I think I may have a photo of you from about a year ago when you pulled “a Darrell” and got into a skirmish with a sidewalk and a curb in downtown Lexington.

Now it’s, got my “ear” on. It only hurts when I rollover in the night, put on a pullover shirt, or forget, and go trying to scratch it.

Yeah, but we are talking about an elderly couple on a road trip for a UK b'ball game vs a guy picking up leaves in his yard

Have you been talking to Ms boss?

Me: that downspout is clogged I’ll have to get up there and unclog it.

Ms. boss: you better call someone

Me: I’ll do it, it only takes five seconds, I do it all the time.

Ms. boss: oh really? You can’t pick up a pile of leaves out of the front yard without having to go to the ER.

Me: stomp, stomp, stomp as I walked away.

She’s always been very astute, and concise in her evaluations of my blunders.

Having said that, she’s very compassionate in the period between the blunder and the realization that I’m not going to die.
