You know, I come on this board now and feel old. Seriously people are into all kinds of tech I don't even know about, and I used to be the guy way ahead of that curve.
Not sure what happened.
People keep asking if I'm back and I haven't really had an answer. But now, yeah, I'm thinkin' I'm back.
Dolby Atmos is fairly new if that helps.
The 2 in 7.1.2 is the number of ceiling speakers to give sound height. For example: if it is raining, you might hear the rain above you.
Also, I'm am the IT director at a college and I'm not really up to date with the fun stuff. My home is lacking on technology.

He's a swing player, athletic but with a sporadic outside shot. RSCI ranked #16, 5*.
I like shooters in that size range, and not enough just to be super athletic, but projected one and done, so he does have the high ceiling.

Seriously though, that sounds really cool. I'm assuming it comes with the latest 4K sets or is it an accessory to most sets put out in the last 2 or 3 years?

Badrose, I'm not sure. I've been reading and learning a lot about it lately. But I think bluray is just starting to use it.
I'm not even a big sound person and normally use head phones. But if I'm building this room I want to do it right.

Dolby Atmos is an interesting technology. From what I understand, it is extendable to a large number of speakers. In essence allowing the same exact soundtrack used for theaters with loads of speakers as your home with not so many speakers. Basically it works by combining up to 128 different tracks; these tracks are comprised of audio and 3-D spatial information. So in essence, you have a raw audio sample and the spatial info tells you where the sound should be "located" and the receiver is responsible for determining where and how the speakers should play said audio to generate this 3-D experience. So a jet plane flying overhead would have the raw audio and it might mostly pan across the L to R channels directly next to you as well as overhead, with little bleed through to other channels. Meanwhile, rumbling thunder may chaotically "dance" across every single speaker. It is an interesting concept, pioneered for spatial audio in video games and extrapolated out (as the technology advanced) into cinemas and home theater. What this also means though is that you can have layouts of 7.1.2, 9.1.2, 7.2.2, 9.2.2, etc. As long as the receiver supports it, it will handle processing what sounds come from where. As usual, DTX has a competing (and technically more advanced technology) called DTS:X. Similar concept but Dolby Atmos is more 2-D plane with some overhead, while DTS intends to be true 3-D, where positioning is actually specificed in polar coordinates based on distance from the listener. The biggest difference though is that Atmos requires speakers to deal with height, while DTS:X will keep right on going no matter HOW you have your room laid out. Both are relatively new inventions only coming out on BlueRay and receivers in the past few years.

Cost is the issue of course. 9 and 11 channel Atmos receivers are a big jump in price. Considering a standard 7.1 would be nicer than I'm used to.

KW, have you picked out your TV yet? 4K with HDR is simply amazing. My set doesn't have it as the HDR tech came in just after I bought mine. Go to your nearest Best Buy and drool.
BTW everything is upscaled to or near 4K if you have it.

I will be using a projector. Not sure if I will get a 4k one or not yet. Might be an upgrade later on. I hope to get my drop ceiling and flooring in this month.
We should be paying the house off in mid July and I'll need to order my projector and last few speakers after that.
Lighting sucks right now but I'll post a couple pictures of my progress.

Goal is to be done around the start of basketball season. I started the basement a few years ago, then kids delayed me. Hopefully the only hold up at this point will be getting someone to build me an entertainment center around the screen. I think that is above my skill set.
