I have been off sick with this flu bug that has been making the rounds here in south Florida. But this past Saturday I learned that my cousin Chuck had passed last Friday at the Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii from complications from prostate cancer.
He was a retired Master Gunnery Sergeant in the USMC. He was a 4 tour veteran of Vietnam, a survivor of the battles of Khe Sahn, Da Nang, his platoon being ambushed and being wiped out except for him and one other Marine, and the final evacuation of Saigon.
He was also a participating Marine in the rescue of the crew of the USS Mayaquez from the North Koreans.
He found God after retiring from the Marines. And he became a preacher, and was resolute in his belief in his faith. He was rough around the edges, but he was a good man. I and many others are going to miss him.
I had been trying to contact him via phone since we last spoke several weeks ago. His wife, also a retired Marine, called me last night. She told me that she is still in Oahu, but returning to the big island soon. She explained to me what had happened, that basically he had let it go too long, and it killed him. He was 65, would have turned 66 in June.
He was the last one on my Mom's side of the family that I still actively communicated with. I don't get along with the rest of the 'outlaws', we just don't "geehaw" at all.
I loved and respected him, even though we did not always agree on everything. Right now, I am kind of feeling like I'm the last one standing.
