Re: Zooming into a deep infrared image of the Orion Nebula

I have a good friend that has been capturing images of that nebula and combining all the images into what he hopes will one day be the "perfect" image of that gas cloud. He probably already has 50 hours of digital data. He has a home built observatory in his back yard and spends hours in freezing temps with the telescope and a modified digital camera body capturing images.

His current image is absolutely stunning and so full of detail it is really amazing.

edited to add this link. This is a canon astrophotography forum that has a ton of near and deep space photos taken by mere mortals with their own telescopes, telephoto lenses and cameras. Images range from ones taken by beginners looking to improve their abilities to ones taken by people that have years of experience. It is worth a click just to see what can be done with a camera, some lenses, or a telescope from right here on the good ole earth

Try this page first. It may get you hooked for looking at some of the less stunning images.

If you can not see the images, you may need to register for a free membership. Painless and well worth it if you love sky images

Here is an image from a forum member that is housed on their photobucket page. Copy and paste or image sharing is strictly prohibited from the canon forum so I had to link to an image on his hosting site.

Clicked on your first link, then clicked on their forum's first topic, "Milky Way in Scotland"... I mean the title says it all, perhaps, but the images you can get of the Milky Way from there are amazing.

    Cool links, dan. Thanks!
