For you guitar players out there

I'm debating on splurging on a new guitar. Got a line on practically new (played for a week, guy didn't "like" the guitar) Taylor 714e acoustic. Seen it lists for $3700 to $4200 but can find on the net for $2800. I can get it for far less ($1600). Now I only play the bass but I do love me some fine guitars so I'm thinking of adding it as an investment. I know Martins are the gold standard when it comes to acoustics but I've always hear that Taylors are right up there with them. So my question is should I expect this to hold its value assuming I keep it in "mint condition" (which it is in currently)?

Plus its something I could eventually pass on to my son who does play the guitar. He has a nice trove of axes but nothing of this quality.

    Good deal or pass?

It will hold its value., Taylor is fast becoming the equal of Martin. Just avoid the laminate back or sides guitars.

Here is another Taylor for photo comparison if you want. They are beautiful guitars.

Oh, I've seen the guitar and played it...well sort of played it. Guy who originally purchased it a couple weeks ago just didn't like the feel of it. Guy is a wealthy older man so he just wants to sell it. I'm 90% sure I'm going to buy it. Might even learn to play it. Can't be that hard to go from a bass to a regular guitar.

Especially with a jewel of a guitar to learn on. On a box like that a fellow could sit in his yard for hours just strumming a G chord, humming Amazing Grace, and still wow the neighbors.

    Good deal.

Apparently you have never heard me sing. Some say it sounds similar to the regurgitating sound I make when I eat fish nachos

This is my Martin. It's a lower end Martin. Cost $700 new. Got it personally autographed by one of my favorite songwriters and performers, Alabama's own, Jamey Johnson.

My only problem with it is simply that I don't know how to play it.

    Taylors are great.

Best playing necks on an acoustic out there imho.

They all have different tones of course, even from model to model within the same brand, depending on size/shape/woods/etc...but Taylors are known for a very clean/crisp sound.

Price wise, you are right on the money at $1600 dollars used...and it should hold to that dollar amount pretty good for the foreseeable future.

I did buy it. Real nice. I fiddled around with it. Might try to learn just for the heck of it. Damn strings are so small and close together IMO (LOL).

Re: For you guitar players out there

Took my first "real" lesson last night. Been practicing some, as time permits. Sort of cool as I'm an inquisitive person and there are many things that I didn't understand about music that made no sense to me as a bass player but now they do. Things like cords, and why one would use a capo, etc..... Now I get it. Sounds stupid, I know but I enjoy the learning process. Now I just got to get smaller and longer fingers.

Also, mine isn't a cutout, not that it matters. I actually like the symmetrical look better anyway. And its that dark dark stain.

Doc let me know when you get the intro to "Roundabout" worked up. We'll all hit the road as Doc and the Chatters or something.
Those senior citizen clubs are easy money and are now full of old hippies.

Let's start out with something a little easier like Wish You Were Here (David Gilmour). Then how about Doc And The Sick Puppies?

Kind of has a ring to it, don't it?

You can master those Roundabout "pull offs" pretty quickly. A must learn for all types of playing.
(you already may be farther along than that)

Well, got a second deal working. Guy I play guitar with is in a pinch for cash so is liquidating his guitars. Willing to sell me a Gibson Hummingbird for $1,000. Its mint except for a small blemish on the top. I've played it and it plays easier than the Taylor due to a wider fretboard which if you have sausage fingers is beneficial. I'll likely give him $1,500 for it even though he is willing to sell it to me for 1k because he needs the money for a legal pbm.

Good deal? Will it hold that value?

Looks like a Hummingbird Cutaway Pro. You can purchase them for anywhere from 1000 to 2000 used.

    It'll never lose value.

I'd go 15 on one in excellent condition w/case. 1250 sounds better.

That was a stock picture, not the actual guitar but it is a Hummingbird cutaway. I also believe it's a custom, case included. Everything is mint. This guy is anal retentive about everything he owns but especially his cars, guitars and dogs

Here's a good CL buy on an 812ce 14th fret Taylor. I expect it can be had cheaper.
