    Word(s) of the day

How about a thread on a word of the day? Of course we can have as many in a day as you want, or none at all, in which case I’ll just amuse myself. I’ll start with a word I jokingly used in the misspelled words thread (I always misspell misspell btw). WOTD, definition, use it in a sentence….

Ululate, verb. Howl or wail as an expression of strong emotion, typically grief.

Sasquatch loudly ululated when he discovered that the raccoons had raided his stash of thin mints.

Crepuscular, adjective. Of, resembling, or relating to twilight.

Sasquatch was always extra careful when driving at dawn or dusk, as he knew that deer are crepuscular creatures.

    Bokeh

Derived from the Japanese word for ‘blur’, this term is used to describe the aesthetic quality of the blur in out-of-focus areas of a picture, or the lens creating them.

    Interesting! And so is this….

Magenta, noun. A reddish-purple color, one of the main colors used in color printing and photography.

Sasquatch always wondered what the honeybees saw if magenta doesn’t actually exist.

Juju, noun. The (usually negative) karmic consequences of an action or behavior.

Sasquatch knew not to wear maroon when UK played Mississippi State. That would be some bad juju.

    geode

is a geological secondary formation within sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Geodes are hollow, vaguely spherical rocks, in which masses of mineral matter (which may include crystals) are secluded. The crystals are formed by the filling of vesicles in volcanic and subvolcanic rocks by minerals deposited from hydrothermal fluids; or by the dissolution of syn-genetic concretions and partial filling by the same or other minerals precipitated from water, groundwater, or hydrothermal fluids.

    Egress, noun. The way out.

    Word(s) of the day

I'm enjoying the thread, will mainly read and try to learn if OK.

But to contribute something, I'll throw in a random legal word from time to time if you want.

From my days as a New Orleans lawyer...

usufruct - the right to enjoy the use and advantages of another's property short of the destruction or waste of its substance.

Sasquatch left a usufruct interest in his house to his second wife so she could live in it, but not sell it and it would end up going to Sasquatch, Jr. eventually.

    Word(s) of the day

    flummoxed: confused, perplexed

(my dad often used this word and I always thought it was one of his invented words)

Sasquatch was/is flummoxed by all the attention he has been getting.

    Accismus (noun)

    Accismus

is a useful word for pretending to be disinterested in something when you actually want it. Pull this word out when you see someone acting like he doesn’t want the last donut.

Example: "I know you want that donut. You're just displaying accismus by pretending you don't."

Shufti, noun. A quick look or reconnoiter.

Sasquatch knew from the strong scent of Old Spice in the air that the cryptozoologist was nearby. After a quick shufti he decided to pack up the cooler and head home.

    Word(s) of the day

    goo·gol ˈgü-ˌgȯl noun

: the figure 1 followed by 100 zeros equal to 10 to the100th power.

Over the unimaginable course of a googol years (1 followed by 100 zeros), black holes will swallow every last bit of matter, then boil away in a process known as Hawking radiation, leaving behind a sea of massless photons.

I kind of cheated on this one. I never knew googol was an actual number until someone brought it up today at work. So I googled it for the definition… it came with the working sentence above. Plug in Sasquatch where you can.

    Insouciant (adjective)

Someone who is very calm and doesn’t seem bothered by the concerns of daily life can be described as insouciant. This is a great positive word to use in a variety of situations.

Example: "The rain began to fall, but she turned her face up to it with the insouciant joy of someone who doesn't mind forgetting an umbrella."

Accoutrement, noun. Additional items of dress or equipment.

As Sasquatch neared the border crossing he realized he had forgotten to put his passport in the fanny pack where he kept his accoutrements. He briefly wondered if he could talk his way across but one slip like talking “aboot” the weather and they would know he was Canadian.

    Synecdoche (noun)

A synecdoche is a figure of speech that uses a part to represent a whole. You’ll find these are surprisingly common, making this a useful word to know. Some synecdoche examples include “head” to represent cattle, “wheels” to talk about a car, and “Kleenex” to represent tissues.

Example: "Smeagol referred to all lip balm as 'Chapstick,' unaware that this was synecdoche."

    graupel

    What Is graupel?

What happens when Mother Nature serves up a precipitation combo of supercooled water droplets we don't know what to call? Smeagol calls it Graupel, which The Washington Post calls "the wintry precipitation you've never heard of" and Merriam-Webster calls "pearl barley."

"Graupel" and it is actually an interesting mix of snow crystals and ice, no matter what Merriam-Webster calls it. Graupel should not be confused with sleet, which is sturdier and more frozen; graupel occurs when a snow pellet falls and is encapsulated by ice. Sounds like hail, right? Well, it isn't hail. Not exactly.

    Obfuscate (verb)

Have you ever seen someone make something more confusing than it needs to be? That person is obfuscating a concept.
