I agree that it looks suspicious, but if I were a Gonzaga fan I would not think that way. We are paranoid, and with good reason.

IMO every student athletes eligibility issue should be resolved prior to the first game, and that decision should be final unless there are mitigating circumstances such as violations by the school or lying to the NCAA. But even in those cases, the punishment should not be retroactive where games are forfeited.
