our education today

I posted a thread the other day about what they are teaching in school these days. WEll today was another example.

Had a very attractive young girl, junior in one of our biggest high schools, with her mom...who is an auditor for the IRS...in the store today to get shoes. I asked why she was out of school and of course she replied Columbus Day. So I had to ask, do you know who Columbus is? She looked at me with a strange look, she had no idea. I just looked at her mom and shook my head. This girl is not a dummy.

So mom and I get to talking about common core math. She tells me the same basic thing another mom told me several months ago. They don't learn multiplication tables, or memorize 2 plus 2. They look at dots or slashes, and count the dots to get to 4. %^&*%$#$^@.

I have been working with my 7 yr old granddaughter on math while they stay with us, hopefully I am getting through.
