My understanding of the unfolding of events is this: the young lady in question came to class and was being very disruptive. The presiding teacher asked her numerous times to stop and to turn her cellular phone off, and it is my understanding that she refused to do so. The teacher then called for upper management, and the school principal showed up. He asked her to stop disrupting class and turn off her phone, and she again refused.the principal then called for the SRO, and shows up on scene. The officer then asked her to do the same things, stop disrupting class and to turn off her phone twice, and she again refused. The officer then attempted to take control of her, she actively resisted his lawful authority, and ended up being arrested.
Everybody involved, except for the female student, did what they should have done. From what I observed from the video I have seen, the officer acted within his lawful authority in this particular situation.
Now, the Sheriff found cause to terminate the officer in this case, and it has been stated that this same officer has been counselled on other occasions from using too much force. So for him personally, this situation may have been his Waterloo, although from what I observed and what I understand to be the narrative, he acted within the scope of his legal authority. Maybe he was on probation from another prior incident, and if so, this incident gave the Sheriff the excuse he needed to terminate this officer. Who can say for sure?
As far as I can determine, based on what I know, the teacher followed his policy, the principal followed his policy, and the officer acted legally within the scope of his authority. And the disruptive student went to jail, exactly as she should have. If I had been that officer, and knew what he knew at that time, I would have acted in the same manner.
You absolutely CANNOT allow students to disrupt the class and interfere with the orderly operation of normal school activities. Period. Order must be maintained.
