OT - any way to get shadow out of photo?

My son's school is celebrating their 30th anniversary this year and they had all the kids spell out the school's initials and 30. Unfortunately, they did so early in the morning when a shadow fell over half the students. In addition, this fire truck ladder cast a shadow, too, although that's not as big an issue.

Anyway, here's the photo. Any photoshop geniuses out there?

Wasn't hard. Used a "dodge" tool to do a passable job.

Only suggestion I have for that type of work is to blow the photo up until it starts to get grainy then back off one setting on the image expansion. Makes the job easier for me

This was a kinda crappy way of doing it in 5 minutes, but I think it will be ok for black and white newspaper print, which is very grainy and the detail won't show anyway. I may take a stab at it tonight when I have more time.
