I'm 15 minutes away from mine without my camera .

Here's a couple very bad phone pics showing sky colors as sun set over Vulcan, where the fireworks will be in a few minutes.

Sit back and enjoy the show. It is a lot more fun that way.

I have some nice shots from years past, but it is like work getting it right.

I didn't get any but I will pass along a few my daughter took in the next couple of days. She is in Washington DC and was at the Capital watching them! She texted me several this evening. Taking a Criminal Justice class that consists of a week in DC, pretty cool, wish I could have seen/done everything she has done this week!!!

I must be the only person in the nation who doesn't get fireworks. To me all they are is a lot of loud noise that makes dogs crap and keeps me up all night. Don't find them particularily exciting or interesting but to each his own.

I did enjoy it without the concern over trying to get a good shot.

Loved the multi-colored circles, the "smiley face" ones, and the ones that sort of "shower" down when they are finished.

They had a good music selection this year, with a nice selection of pop music and patriotic songs, like the ever popular "Stars and Stripes Forever." They had the pop song, "Happy," synchronized with the smiley face fireworks, which was really neat. They finished with the grand finale, a big finish set to "Sweet Home Alabama," which you know is a no-brainer way to conclude here.

Only 20 minutes, but really nicely done. We had a great view, and found a route back home that took only 35 minutes, from backed up parking lot to my front doorstep. Would take 20 minutes at 4 am with nobody on the road, as we live technically about 15 miles south of Birmingham.

We got there early to stake out our spot, which was next to a Wendy's, handy for restroom breaks and sustenance as needed. My son brought his soccer ball, and we dribbled, juggled, and practiced throw-ins, and just had a cool time.

No pictures, but a good family outing. I'll take it.

Pro tip, Doc. Don't get too close to the fireworks. Not loud at all if you are a distance away. Wild guess that we were 2+ miles away. Can hear some pops and booms, but none loud. All of them broadcast over local FM radio stations for the duration of the show, so bring a radio, and you see it better farther away, anyway.

One more pro tip. Don't rely on TuneIn radio or similar based on an Internet connection. It is not in sync with the true FM radio broadcast.

Here's one from Lexington, tweeted by my local weatherman. Really cool, with rainbow horizon right after sunset.

Pre-fireworks sunset in NYC. There are more, but I thought these were the coolest.

The original pre-gunpowder fireworks, great photo.

Mostly I mean the crap stuff that people buy and shoot in the streets. I mean lite a fuse and run, the thing goes fizz, bang...wow (yawn). Mostly everybody watches to see which of your idiot neighbors is the biggest idiot and who ends up at the hospital first.

    Ahh, I get ya.

Yeah, that's different. I get the appeal, but I also get the non-appeal, and I'm closer to your point than the other, too. We occasionally do it ourselves because the kids like it, but they're not wild about it, either--so we avoid it mostly.

One of the best 4th of July celebrations ever was the trip to DC, where we sat on the steps of the US Capitol Building, listening to the National Symphony and watching the fireworks down the Mall and over the Washington Monument. It's something every American should experience at least once.

We did that one year, must have been 8 or 9 years ago. We didn't plan on being in DC for the fourth, just worked out that way. Sort of cool. Did Williamsburg to DC to Philly to Hersey PA. That was our "Dead Body Hotel" trip.
