Cars you fondly remember but no longer own

18-year old, bought new with my own money--1978 Pontiac Trans-Am, silver, no bird. Had it for two years before totaling it by ramming a telephone pole. Louisiana Power & Light truck was parked on the wrong side of the road after midnight, all four wheels on the road, with headlights on, in a curve--they paid for the car.

After that, bought a 1980 Z-28 Camaro--midnight blue. Liked the car, didn't love it like I did the Trans-Am. Had that car stolen in New Orleans in 1983, and that's when I decided to become a boring adult. No more fun cars since then, although the Q45t I owned for a short while was pretty fun to drive.

FWIW, I drove a mustang convertible last weekend. Thinking the midlife crisis needs to hit soon.

What are your cars you fondly remember, but no longer own?

Grass green fiat convertible, used to take it for drives at the Land Between the Lakes when we lived in Hopkinsville. Right side leaked badly, engine in rear and trunk in front. It was my wife's car but we enjoyed having that top down and driving it on weekends

1988 white Saab 900s convertible. I no longer even own a picture of it, sadly. The tiny back seat became unworkable as the kids grew. When they get out of college I'm going looking for something equally enjoyable.

1972 Limited edition Mustang fastback with Levi interior. I should not remember it fondly as it almost killed me once, but there are lots of good memories associated with it as well.

And 2nd place is a 1969 Grand Prix SJ. I think I would still own this car if I had not taken a job, while I owned the car, that caused me to drive 140 miles round trip a day 6 days a week for my new job. Good grief man gasoline was 70 cents per gallon back then and the GP averaged 14 mpg on a good day

dan, the car almost killed you, or did you drive too fast and almost killed the car I had the same grand prix, same color except it was not a white top, mine was black and same year. I didn't remember it being that big and clunky looking

Re: Cars you fondly remember but no longer own

jazy that car was an accident waiting to happen if the roads were the least bit wet. It had the least amount of rear end traction of any car I ever owned. It would break loose in the rear end in a heartbeat. I was running about 60 and punched it a bit to pass a slower car on a secondary road and the next thing I knew the car and I were running up a bank and flipping end over end a couple of times before it came to rest on its top.

Big and clunky? Dang man that was a beautiful car and rode and drove like a refined sports car. 375 hp out of the factory from that big block 400 cid

67 Fairlane with a 390 HO. My Dad sold it soon after I began driving. Probably saved my life. Too much car for a sixteen year old.

Yeah, a 67. I was in my early twenties and my Grandpa bought it for me wholesale where he worked. It was a trade in and I believe we paid 400.00 or so.

    It was cherry too

Took me more than 48 hours to post on this thread. Took that long to recover from the shock of Darrell with hard core muscle cars.

I miss this one. Wasn't even mine, was my mother's, but I still miss it. Lincoln Continental Mark V 2 door. Had a built in CB, moon roof, the works.

People keep asking if I'm back and I haven't really had an answer. But now, yeah, I'm thinkin' I'm back.

Had a car like this one.

Bought the body and tranny and put a vintage 330 in it. No matching numbers to the engine, but hey, it turned the ladies heads and would roast the tires; all that mattered at a young age. Today I would try to find the original block and see if it was salvageable. I drove an '81 Z28 white with blue stripes before this one.

Sweet. Had a 70 Cutlass with a stock 350/350. The wifes favorite car I ever owned. She loved to drive that sucker around.

Had a 63 Pontiac Lemans too with a 326 posi traction three speed on the floor. It would burn the tires off in all three gears. Run dang near as strong as the bigger block Goats and the like.
    Strange but true.

Had a 65 Sport Fury convertible with a 383 HP that my Grandfather bought me also. Had it for a month or so and the engine missed pretty bad so I sold it to my cousin. He removed the engine and they built it up for his 65 two door hardtop adding twin fours and a cam etc..

The convertible was buried in their backyard, and everytime I pass their old house I wonder whats left of it. Been since 72 or so...I guess not much.
One other thing, its sitting on top of a complete (then at least) non restored (naturally), Model A

My first car was an old Rambler with a push button automatic on the dash and a I also had a 48 Bug that I beat around in some at the same time. It had a top speed of around 45 or so. Neither was a hit with the ladies

My Grandfather had a tight bond with the Swopes here in the Kentucky area. He was a great mechanic and worked for them from the early sixties until he passed on. They called him Pappy, as about everyone did.

When these cars were traded in all he had to do was ask and he could usually get them for only what the lot needed to make the proper money on a deal...which they didn't need the cars for usually.

I didn't realize then how special what he was doing for me really was. Saddens me that I don't think I ever really showed the appreciation I should have.
My Papaw was one of the most loved men I ever knew, and not just by our family, but everyone.

He could tear one down to the smallest bolt and fix things others couldn't begin to fix, and put it all back together with a wink. The first man to ever put 409 heads on a 348 in a 58 Chevy and blow away the competition at Beech Bend when I was a little lad. He told them what it was but the book said it wouldn't work so they ran it a stock 348.
They changed the book a couple of years later and someone protested. He refused to tear it down and brought it home.

I recall he and another Pappy raced with each other a lot. A popular local figure in Bowling Green, Pappy Greenfield.

Papaw ended up invaluable to about everyone he ever met, for many reasons. An avid crappie fisherman too.

I get the feeling, with the way you spoke of him, he knew.
