    "Reasonable" guilty pleasures....

I'm just a guy with five kids who do stuff, and I enjoy the stuff they do, rather than my own. But there are a few minor guilty pleasures I allow myself. I'll tell one, then you tell one. Now, I realize everybody's "reasonable" is different, but if somebody tells me about their $30,000 boat, I'm going to beat them with a stick.

    Here's one of mine.

Jazy asked me about this last night, with both of us being St. Louis Cardinals baseball fans. When we bought my wife's van, it came with XM radio. I converted that plan to one that allows XM in her car, together with an internet/smart phone subscription. It is very reasonable, something like $10 a month for both.

The app subscription isn't the full version, but it has a ton of channels, including all the national news services I sometimes listen to, certain shows like the old court-tv type shows, and a lot of sports. It includes all MLB games, for example, and I have the St. Louis Cardinals broadcast channel "favorited" so I can just click on it and listen to it while I walk around the neighborhood. Nothing like listening to a couple of innings of baseball and see that you've gone several thousand steps without realizing it.

    What's one of yours?

Bang Bang Shrimp on Wednesdays for $5.99 each. Got some last night when I got off work.
Cool as a rule, but sometimes bad is bad.

Golf. Because I work 6 days I only can play on Sundays after church and my game as suffered tremendously. When I was a sales rep there were times of the year I could play 3 times a week, as a result my average score is now 12 shots higher. But I enjoy the company, exercise and scenery.
And the public course we play is pretty nice, beautiful scenery, and cost me $389 a year plus my cart fees.

    You....

JazyD, that's perfect. I know you live in an area with good golf at reasonable prices, and that's what I'm talking about.

I grew up with $5 green fees, but where I played in Louisiana, I may have been overcharged.

Sounds silly, but carrying the Sirius/XM radio subscription that came with Grammy's car so we (me; she sleeps) can listen to Blue Collar Comedy and the various NASCAR channels (as well as Outlaw) while we take our little road trips across the south.

Not silly at all. It's great for your use.

My friend has an 11 second, in the quarter mile, Camaro and I drive it on the strip a few times a year. The smell of burning rubber and pin your butt to the back of the seat is something I have always enjoyed. I used to have a screaming chicken that would do the same, but like that over priced boat that we used to have, it went to a better home when the family grew.

The other guilty pleasure is spending a few bucks to improve the meager supply of early 1900's woodworking tools I have.

Going to baseball and football games in just about any venue or level is the best guilty pleasure I have.

Is that like that show I have seen on TV with the special hand saws and such? What type of tools do you have?

    Re: "Reasonable" guilty pleasures....

Brings back memories and getting put on probation by my dad. Cousin got a new GTO when the first came out, had the 4th one to hit Missouri and we went for a visit. I was 16 and Denny was 21. Dad told me not to go with Denny when he got off work at midnight. Of course when he got home and asked if I was ready, what do you think I said. So we head down to Hall street in St Lou and raced everyone there for hours, for lane lighted street. Got to his house at 6am and dad was coming to get me at 6:30 am. Well naturally I wasn't asleep and just pretended. I hear dad ask my uncle if I had gone with Denny. I then hear uncle say...I do t know but when I looked in at 5:30 he wasn't in bed. You know the rest of the story, got to know my room very well over the next 6 weeks.

    7800? That's not used, that's a good test drive.

A few block planes, rabetting planes, brace and bits, dividers, draw knives, spoke shaves, wooden mallets, chisels, froes, a few hand saws, and my pride and joy, a refurbished tredale powered wood lathe.

Didn't know you collected those Dan. I'll keep an eye out for any nice piece that comes along.

Fast cars, faster women, booze, basketball. The usual Kentucky stuff.
People keep asking if I'm back and I haven't really had an answer. But now, yeah, I'm thinkin' I'm back.

I don't believe in the concept of "guilty" pleasures. Unless it's something like touching little boys, you shouldn't feel bad for liking the things you like and other people shouldn't make you feel bad, either.

That said, I'll join some others and claim my car as a personal obsession. I'm also going through another Minecraft phase, and I just bought the entire Stargate SG-1 series collectors edition (it was on sale!).

That's key getting the kids involved.

Anytime I want I can say, "I'm going to play golf" if my 12-year old is part of the process. Golden!
