If you're into genealogy, a new season of "Finding Your Roots" has started on PBS. They take 2-3 celebrities/episode and trace back through their family tree and do a DNA thing at the end. Episode 1 was Larry David and Bernie Sanders. Episode 2 was Christopher Walken, Fred Armisen and Carly Simon, and Episode 3 was Ted Danson, Mary Steenbergen and William H. Macy. Yeah, it's a PBS-ish type of lineup so far, but they do have some non-progressives on the show from time to time. ;) Mrs. BEvans and I enjoy the show, as well as "Who Do You Think You Are?" which come back in the spring on TLC.
It's one of my favorite TV shows, for sure. It records to my DroidTV app, and I usually just watch it on my phone, but occasionally I'll cast it to TV. Even though each episode (usually) is a separate "show," I generally "save up" the shows and watch 2 or 3 at a time. With the commercials stripped out of it, three episodes is like a superb 2-hour movie.
Thinking about dropping Netflix. We've been customers for over 12 years, first DVD, then DVD + streaming then just streaming. Lately I haven't found much on Netflix I've wanted to watch (or watch again)--most of our online streaming has been either Hulu or Amazon Prime.
I'm looking at Instantwatcher's list of the 50 most popular Netflix shows and the list is underwhelming IMHO. I've not gotten into the Netflix original shows for the most part, although some like the Marvel shows I haven't watched. (Frankly, I feel like I'm a little on Marvel Saturation Alert. Ever since Age of Ultron I've felt like it's all too much.)
Anybody else feel that way about Netflix? Is there a reason I shouldn't reclaim that $10 into my monthly budget?
The Rveal Player endorsed by Doc is starting to look pretty good.
We use it mainly to watch old tv shows we never watched on commercial tv like Parks and Recreation and The Office.
Stranger Things is about to start up again in about 3 or 4 days on Netflix. I know a lot of folks here liked it.
October 27th
Stranger Things season 2 is up!
The soundtrack on Stranger Things brings back some memories.
Just read that Stranger Things will have a 3rd season in 2019.
I just read that a 4K version of The Godfather is in the work which is great news. I started watching it last night from an old blu-ray copy and it was horrible, lots of heavy snow on the screen. No word as to when the 4K version will come out yet.
I just watched a Kurt Russell movie that I did not know about until I started going through my Amazon Prime list.
It's a western, "Bone Tomahawk", made in 2015. The storyline revolves around 3 people, 2 men & a woman, who are kidnapped from a frontier western jail. Kurt Russell, his Chief Deputy, and 2 others go after them to effect a rescue, and if course, nothing goes well.
Oh, did I mention that the antagonists are cannibals?
WARNING: there is some extremely graphic violence in this movie, and this is one the kids should definitely NOT watch! If anyone chooses to watch it, you will see what I'm talking about. But again, don't watch this one around small children.
Good movie. Very violent, and definitely not something you would associate with Kurt Russell.
I bought the blu-ray and the director and some of the cast was present on the extra features. The movie was done on a small budget and time management was crucial so they pretty much had to get it right pretty quick. The cool part was when they weren't actively engaged with the savages they made a lot of goofy small talk primarily by the deputy. It was kind of charming. Great film.
If you like westerns, The Magnificent Seven and 3:10 to Yuma are pretty good as well.
I was not counting on the extremely violent content toward the end. I knew there would be some violence, but what I witnessed was very savage, indeed.
And I agree, the small talk, especially about the flea circus, was kind of funny, especially when the captive woman started talking about it so matter of factly.
Any Bond fans here?
Here's a list in order of popularity from IMdB followers:

Rank 'em with your preferences. The above list generally falls the way I see it with a few exceptions.
I really like Bond movies (especially the early Connery ones), but for some reason I've not seen any of the Daniel Craig Bond movies. I got Casino Royale from the library and will watch it soon.
Some movies I've seen recently:
--The Hero (on Blu Ray): Interesting rumination on regret and what we do with the end of our lives. Sam Elliott is awesome in this, as are Laura Prepon and Nick Offerman.
--Home Again: Terrible even by date movie/chick flick standards. Saw it because the movie we thought we would be seeing wasn't being shown, Mrs. BEvans likes Reese Witherspoon and we could basically see it for free with MoviePass.
--Victoria and Abdul: Really enjoyed this one. Story of Queen Victoria's working relationship/friendship with an Indian servant. Dame Judy Densch was awesome.
Probably going to see the new Thor movie and Thank You For Your Service this weekend.
I think you'll really like Casino Royale, Brian.
I would put Connery and Craig pretty even overall. I would say that the Craig movies tend to be more realistic, but it was Connery who started it all and did quite well as the pioneer.
Roger Moore's version had very few fight scenes and relied more on innuendo and stunt doubles. His first three were OK but he did four more after that and they were IMO terrible.
Pierce Brosnan, see Roger Moore. Same pattern, though thankfully fewer.
My brother turned me on to Bond movies when I was about 8, I think, and I haven't missed any unless you count the last 3 Moore versions when I fell asleep. (Could owe to the fact I'd been working night shifts) My dates were very understanding. :)
Longmire is back on Netflix, new season.
Really good movie. I enjoyed listening to the book from which it was adapted.
I'm kind of into hiking books and movies, for some reason. I like the idea of getting out and doing a long hike, but don't have the time to do the ones that require weeks (like the Camino de Santiago) or months (like the Appalachian Trail or Pacific Crest Trail).
Some other hiking movies/documentaries I've enjoyed:
--A Walk In The Woods, adapted from the Bill Bryson book about his attempt to thru-hike the AT;
--The Way, a fictional account of a father (Martin Sheen) hiking the Camino after his son dies while hiking it;
--Life In A Walk, a documentary by a son as he and his father hike the Camino;
--A Mile Mile And A Half, a documentary of a group of friends who hike the John Muir Trail in California.
You must love Lord of the Rings. :)
For Monty Python fans, Jabberwocky will be available to buy tomorrow thanks to the Criterion folks. Criterion is known for restoration of movies.

If you buy Blu-ray movies or TV shows there are a lot on sale here: a lot are at their lowest :

True Detective season 1 at $12.96 is a steal.
Enjoying Season 2 of "The Crown" on Netflix. If you didn't catch Season 1 it's well worth starting there and working your way to the new season.
Budget:$3,500,000 (estimated)
Gross USA: $83,400,000
Cumulative Worldwide Gross: $130,000,000, 31 December 1981
Airplane's success numbers.
Watching it again after 2 or 3 years and it never fails to make me laugh.
Just finished Leon the Professional and I highly recommend it. It stars Natalie Portman in her first major role and several other actors you'd recognize. The IMdB summary: Mathilda, a 12-year-old girl, is reluctantly taken in by Léon, a professional assassin, after her family is murdered. Léon and Mathilda form an unusual relationship, as she becomes his protégée and learns the assassin's trade. The movie scores an 8.6 out of 10 with over 800,000 votes overall. This movie has a little bit of everything.
Some odds and ends:
--Just now getting to watching "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" on Amazon Prime. Very funny and also a nice little period show about NY in the late 50s;
--Comedians With Cars Getting Coffee is now on Netflix--Jerry Seinfeld kicking it with comedians/comedy writers. Funny in a Seinfeldian way;
--I'm a fan of old, pre-80s Chicago (with that big horn section and before the death of Terry Kath, a great, underrated guitarist). Netflix has a new and very good documentary of Chicago, "Now More Than Ever."
I watched Comedians With Cars Getting Coffee when it was on Crackle. I'd exhausted what was there but if he's done more I'll definitely watch. Cool show.
I'll be checking the other two as well. Thanks.
I noticed a month or 2 ago that Hulu has the complete St. Elsewhere and Hill Street Blues series. I learned yesterday they just added ER. It had been years since I watched it and forgot how good it was, especially the first few seasons.
Also, if you watched "I'll Have What Phil's Having" (a travel/food show with Everybody Loves Raymond creator Phil Rosenthal) on PBS, it's now moved to Netflix and they just put the new season up. It's now called "Somebody Feed Phil" but it's basically the same show. Both the PBS season and the new Netflix season are worth a watch.
I did the same thing with Person of Interest on Netflix. Just started that yesterday. I did go through the three recommendations you mentioned about. All good though I think the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is going to be really good. Most of Seinfeld stuff was good depending on who he was riding with. I was a big Chicago fan in the early '70s and I remember Color My World being the go-to song for a slow dance with your girl. I'm 60 now so reminiscing is one of my favorite hobbies. :) Thanks again for bringing those to my attention.
Glad you like Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, badrose. And I think you're right on the Seinfeld show--the guest makes it. Although I noticed some of the shows I didn't expect to be good ended up being funny, and vice versa. I wasn't expecting much from the George Wallace episode but I thought it was a hoot. OTOH, I expected more from the Patton Oswalt episode. It was good, just not great.
Last night I noticed Lawrence of Arabia is back on Amazon Prime. It cycles on and off the various services. My all-time favorite.
How did you like Casino Royale? The 4th in that line, SPECTRE, is available on Amazon Prime in 4K. (in HD as well) IMO it's as good as CR. Quantum of Solace and Skyfall came out in between.
^Unfortunately, no. I got busy with the holiday season and had to take it back to the library. But thanks for the reminder--I'll check it out again and actually watch it this time. :D
PSA: Amazon has the Blu Ray/DVD/Digital download version of Dunkirk available for only $10 today:

I still haven't activated my MoviePasses (I have 3) annual pass. I need to do that.
That's a ridiculous price! The 4K is going for 29.96 which is ridiculous. I'll keep a close watch to see if the 4K version gives some on that price today. Both versions get top ratings, a 5 out of 5. Thanks for the heads up. BTW IIRC you own a 4K TV, right?
VUDU has the 4K at 19.99 but that is streaming only.
