Seriously, social media isn't a measure of anything but the limits of American insanity. I have no idea why Smith stepped down, but like you I have to think maybe it's personal (people do retire when they get enough money) or he's just tired of the job (people retire for that reason too). Maybe part of being tired of the job is the direction of media, etc., I could see that.
Like Doc I'm not sure it's a direction we're going, I think we've arrived. In some ways Fox has actually trailed, as MSNBC is living in complete fantasy land and CNN is racing there due to ratings concerns. Fox is racing the other way, but isn't quite as far off field as the other two. Fox still has a few more middle of the road people, not sure you can find a soul at MSNBC that is in that category.
But it won't matter. the push in the main media plus the social media insanity plus the education system insanity means there won't be any more discourse and reasoning. Ellen Degeneres gets lit up for being able to even sit with Bush II despite being a staunch liberal and a lesbian. She broke the commandments of the leftist faith by being able to see an opponent as a human being, and while some applaud it many do not.
