Bernie learns economics!
So the biggest proponent of the $15 minimum wage caves to his workers and has to cut their hours. Shocking, isnt it? Wish somebody had foreseen that! (DWS)
Bernie Sanders campaign announces it will cut hours to pay staffers $15 minimum wage, prompting mockery

When I saw the title of the OP my immediate thought was, Hell did freeze over.

Re: Bernie learns economics!
This is exactly why the CBO predicts up to 3.7 million people will lose their jobs by pushing the minimum wage to $15/hr.

Re: Bernie learns economics!
lol. Dumbass socialist MF's.... (think I have an opinion on this one?)
"hey kid, we're here to help. B/c we know you are struggling paying the bills and trying to make ends meet, we're going to raise your rate to $15 an hour! Now, you won't make a penny more actual income, b/c we're going to cut your hours back so it's all a wash. Isn't that great!?"
"What? You still need more money? Well maybe with the saved 5-10 hours a week we shave off the ends of every day in just 1-2 hour increments you can find a second job. You know, somewhere REALLY close that only needs someone after 5 or 6 pm. "
I'm sure their benefits package is good, but it's hilarious they've run up against a BUDGET where they don't have UNLIMITED money to just hand out to people so they can all be better off, regardless of what that work is WORTH in the marketplace.
Why not REALLY help out all their supporters and raise it to $25 and cut them back to 3 days a week? After all $15 is barely getting by.
What? They can't get enough work done for the money available? Why that shouldn't matter to a socialist.
Esp. a socialist who has 3 homes, is worth millions of dollars, and the last three years hasn't given even $20K a year to charity.

Re: Bernie learns economics!
BTW, the last 3 people I've hired their biggest concern was getting a full 40 hour week. What places are doing is cutting their hours back to avoid benefits and such kicking in, or just using them as day labor.
It's not the wage per se, it's the total take home pay, and forcing the minimum up like that will only make it worse, and lead to more technology substitution.
I'm assuming they put these folks on salary otherwise they'd be hitting overtime and be well over $15 an hour, so they're working non-career employees more than 40 hours a week and side stepping overtime, and now cutting back their hours so they can technically pay them more without really paying them more.
Would love to dig into their health insurance benefits too.

He received a lesson, but I doubt he learned anything.

This doesn't sound like a bad deal at all to me right now :) Exempt status is certainly winning lately.

Who would have thought that was important?

All these rules are designed to keep hard working people down. I've had employees who want more than 40 hours, and I want them to have them, but I can't pay time and a half for that work, so I have to give it to someone else or not get it done. They WANT to do better and climb up the economic ladder, and the government holds them back.
Fools like Sanders may even think they're helping, but they're only hurting the most promising people who are trying to make a better life for themselves.
Trust me, the current labor market is EXTREMELY competitive. If you're doing good work for someone you're getting paid good money for it these days. Some is worth more than other, but for a good employee they'll find a good job and make a decent wage.

As long as you don't actually need more money it's dandy. If you're still struggling to get by, not so much. lol.
Really the last 5 people I've hired have all asked if it was 40 hours a week before we even discussed rate. Does them no good to make a good rate and only get 12 or 16 hours a week. ANd yes, some of them were getting that few hours.

We have started hiring more part-time employees. Benefits cost us 42%. We can get 56 hours out of 2 people and save money. Not a trend I care for but part of the times I guess. Some DOL laws passed by Obama have really handcuffed us.

It's not the company's fault. I can't let the guys go over 40 hours even though I could use the extra work. If I could pay them the same wage, and they WANT that deal, we'd be fine, but I can't pay time and a half and make the math work.
All these rules set up to "protect" employees have only hurt the employees with the most drive and desire to work hard and build a future.
The same way you can get welfare benefits as long as you don't actually save any money. Do that and you're out. Can't let people learn how to manage money and build a future for themselves. Gotta keep them poor, and voting for the right party.

Exaxtly...if you can not make ends meet working 40 hr and making $450, how are you going to make ends meet working $30 hrs and making $450? Younstill have $450 to pay your bills. Now you can get a second job. Wonder how many 10 hr work week jobs are out there?
But still, these are campaign workers....basically temp jobs. Not a big resume builder...I made "Feel the Bern" signs....... I often look for people with such skills when browsing the applications for hire.
The solution is work the shitty job to gain actual work experience and move up the pay scale to a $20 hr job....do a good job, gain experience and move to a $25 hr job, then repeat

Yep, so like so many predicted you cut to part time so as to eliminate benefits..like mandated health care.

Re: Bernie learns economics!
This little piece of advice is lost on the folks spewing the “Living wage” argument.

Re: Bernie learns economics!
And people should start being paid for what they do, not the hours they put in, the size desk they sit behind, or who they know. Toil and Sweat is the underpaid element, the cushy’er jobs get the money and do the financial scheming with their office doors locked, while the manual labor guy works harder and harder, comes home, falls asleep and starts over the next day six days a week
Too many people work hardest at looking for ways to avoid work. Why? Because “they” are the former.
But without the sweat and labor, they have absolutely nothing...say it again! :653:
Increase the minimum wage a little for them and not the rest. For gratitude sake if nothing else

Cost me 10K a year because I could no longer teach as an adjunct as a staff member.

Before selecting careers a lot of people need to find out what is in demand and pays well. Fast food and cashier jobs, which are a large portion of minimum wage jobs, are never going to be more than entry level positions.
A lot of trades are in great demand. I know of a lot of guys pulling in really good money in telecommunications, doing network cabling. HVAC techs are in high demand. Diesel mechanics, auto mechanics, and many other vocationally trained trades are all paying well. Union laborers will start out at more than $15 an hour.
What isn’t in demand are those with liberal arts and social work degrees, kids spend $100,000 to get degrees worth $20K or less per year. That doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Re: Bernie learns economics!
Bernie professes love for the Scandinavian way of doing things, but they have no minimum wage and let the markets determine value.
-
Re: Bernie learns economics!
I think it’s not long before Christ sets all that strait anyway. I believe some will still labor and some will not. The greatest shall become the least and the least great. Amen?

She goes on to mention two items that are fairly low in price. Over the weekend at Kroger eggs were 99 cents a dozen, milk $2.59.
My oldest daughter waited on tables at Jerry’s in Morehead while going to MSU. She did better with tips than she would have done had she been paid the hourly minimum wage at the time.

How expensive does she think things will get when every employer has to up their payroll by such a huge amount?
Liberals just can't get their heads around the fact that money has to come from somewhere.

Re: Bernie learns economics!
There actually is a money tree. But I'm pretty sure it only grows leaves and not dollars.

Well....if the rich would pay their fair share, and didn't get "tax cuts for the wealthy". What we need is Tax cuts for the poor (you know, those who DON'T pay any taxes, which would be WELFARE) and the people who are already paying nearly 40% of all income taxes need to pay more.
Quote:
In 2016, the top 1 percent of taxpayers accounted for more income taxes paid than the bottom 90 percent combined. The top 1 percent of taxpayers paid roughly $538 billion, or 37.3 percent of all income taxes, while the bottom 90 percent paid about $440 billion, or 30.5 percent of all income taxes
--link
Although my favorite is
Quote:
The top 1 percent of taxpayers paid a 26.9 percent individual income tax rate, which is more than seven times higher than taxpayers in the bottom 50 percent (3.7 percent).
this whole increase the minimum wage stuff is 100% pandering for votes. At least call it what it is. I have no issue with a reasonable increase in the hourly wage since it has not increased 12 years. However more than doubling it is stupid, and shows a total lack of understanding of economics. And these are the people we are suppose to choose from to be the President?

Re: Bernie learns economics!
I wish I was lucky enough to pay my one employee $15 per hour. He gets 25% of what each load he delivers pays. He made $1900 just a couple weeks ago. Sad part is, he’s not that great of an employee. Bitches and complains constantly. I’d love to fire his ass at times but finding a decent CDL driver is next to impossible at times.

Our school district trains people every year, helps them get their CDL, and puts them behind the wheel of a school bus. They work a while then go get better paying jobs. CDL jobs are a lot more plentiful than are the drivers. This is good for drivers, bad for people searching for good drivers.

Where do you live? Many of the KCTCS schools have training programs.
KCTCS = Kentucky community college system.

Re: Bernie learns economics!
Just a guess here, but getting a CDL holder that can pass an anytime drug test must be an issue too..
