Re: Softball Rules Question
Sounds like interference either way to me but :533:
Re: Softball Rules Question
It depends.
(How's that for a nice lawyer answer? :evilgrin0007:)
Official Baseball Rulebook Rule 6.01 says it's interference if the batter's action hinders the catcher. Dead ball, runners return to their previous base.
HS Baseball Rulebook Section 4 makes it a matter of the batter-runner's intent rather than whether it hindered the catcher.
Not sure about softball. :533:

They are worse than umpires! :tongue08:
I'm not 100% on the fast pitch difference myself.
But the rule as called yesterday...All you have to do is strike out, turn around and throw the bat at the catcher, and take your base lol (note it was not that flagrant at all, but if I was playing and didn't like the catcher.... j/k.... maybe lol)
Re: Softball Rules Question
Dropped third strike it’s a live play. Bat if thrown interferes with catcher the runner is out, if deemed the bat is dropped normally and interferes then it’s a live play. Depends on the umps interpretation of how the bat was discarded. 10u I’d say most bats are flung a bit wildly on a play like that so maybe the ump figured it was within the norms so let it play on. I’m with you if it interferes at all in the play at that age you’re probably getting the base.

Going to stick this here. We are doing a fundraiser. Please do not feel obligated to support them for me. I pay more than my fair share because I hate fundraising. But I also learned that people really like Rada products and they asked me to let them know when we sell again.

Re: Softball Rules Question
Back to the topic. Most everyone agrees that it should have been interference. I talked to the head ump for our area and he agreed "as long as it impacted the play" it would be interference.
Hitting the catcher for throwing the bat as part of the swing was pretty debatable by the umps I spoke with.

Oops. You have to get down.
Re: Softball Rules Question
I'm learning that dropped 3rd strike is very confusing at this age. It confuses the players, and that can confuse the coaches and even the umps.
This past weekend...They had bases loaded with one out. We strike out the batter, catcher drops it. Batter is out because there is not a base available. We teach our catcher to step on the plate anyway, just easier this way. Girl on 3rd was confused and ran home. We tagged her, for what should have been the 3rd out. Ump calls her out, then decided it should be a dead ball....So we didn't get out of the inning.
The other team was arguing the batter foul tipped it. And maybe she did, I couldn't see it and didn't hear it. But others thought she did as well.

One of my favorite YouTube channels is Close Call Sports, which breaks down videos that raise rules questions like this and also MLB ejections:

Agree. I'd much rather be working on other things with our girls. Let it be live for the runners and let the batter be out.
