I remember a lot of people tried to make political points with something we now know was a hoax perpetrated by someone they were affiliated with. And the hoax caused a lot of trouble for the MSU institution and Bozeman and MSU's awesome former President who retired this month.

In my opinion, local politicians and the Federal govt are also bad actors in the situation as well.

“In spring 2023, the Queer Straight Alliance reported email threats, but members of the club that supports LGBTQ+ students and others told the Board of Regents and the Daily Montanan they felt the administration fell short in responding to their safety concerns.

In October 2023, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights informed MSU it was under investigation for discrimination for “failing to respond appropriately” to the threats and reports of harassment based on sex, race, color and national origin.”

“Wu helped Lin plan an “Anti-Hate Teach-In” at MSU, according to court records. Wu served as president of the Chinese Culture Club at MSU and testified about the increase of hate crimes on college campuses to the Montana Board of Regents.”

So Wu sent the messages, then complained about them happening to the Board of Regents. He used the messages to run for student government Senate saying that the campus was dangerous. Then the messages were used as a cause for Biden’s DoJ to start an investigation into MSU that is still on-going despite now and for a while knowing they came from within one of the clubs itself. And from a person in one or more of the mentioned classes of people.

It's not really a hoax, per se. The messages were real. They came from an imposter who pretended that the messages were cause to elect him.

He faces five years in prison, but in the meantime institutions I care about have taken a hit, even nationally reported on, from this bogus jerk and the people who will use any excuse to further their causes.
