When I was almost 17, my younger brother and a friend hitch-hiked to Lexington for the MSU game IIRC. We slipped into the Coliseum, and played basketball for over an hour. It was so much fun. I remember getting a picture of Coach Rupp and a player sitting on the bench awaiting the tipoff (cannot remember who). I was no more than 10 feet away from them. Unreal that we could just walk down to the floor like that.
I'm actually surprised they can get it done that quick. Man it needs a lot of work.
Not sure how accessible the systems are, but the bathrooms need to basically be ripped out and rebuilt, you have to run all the ducting for HVAC and install all the hvac, redo the roof which leaks like a colander that lost a fight with a shotgun, and then replace all the seating, they are ripping out the upper offices to make it into a suite type area, then all the finish work.
Also the setup and such for it is so large scale, and then factor in that this is university/government work, so the contractors have to observe all the technicalities, which slows down the work.
If they can get that all done by fall 2024 with all of the coordination that will have to happen, I think they will have done a good job. A private site would maybe move somewhat quicker, but not a lot IMO. Not for that scope of work.
Anything. It’s no longer Memorial Coliseum. It’s a glorified HS gym compare the rich quality of the wood in that chair to the cheapass bleachers replacing it.
Guess the dumpster diving for the floor taught them a lesson lol.
Thanks for the pic. I see that lounge area will actually be on Euclid side spanning the front.
I will miss the wood seats. My butt is somewhat less sorry to see them go. I won't miss how all but 2 stalls in the women's bathroom were broken per my wife, or the water damage, or lack of AC. I may miss the huge circular urinals they converted into hand washing stations. As a kid I remember them being used as they were originally intended lol.
Now if they can figure out how to have better concessions despite the smaller crowds....
