  • Lonny’s Bird-Eye View of the Spring Game in the Frozen Tundra

    By: LONNY DEMAREE

Having witnessed a bevy of spring games, it’s what you see but quite often it’s what you don’t often see.

    • You see the dazzling talents of Will Levis and a small portion of his receiving corps. You didn’t see the 4.3-forty speed of Dekel Crowdus who flashed earlier in spring practice but was out with a sprained ankle. Stoops said he has big play ability.

    • “Will (Levis) is a different type of guy,” Vince Marrow said. “I don’t know how Penn State let him get away. I been around a lot of great quarterbacks (Jim Kelly) and the like. I really, really like this team”

    • You did see the Virginia Tech transfer Tayvion Robinson. Don’t get it confused with Wan’Dale Robinson. He might have the top end speed of the one gone on to the Pros but he is more-twitchy and runs crisper routes. Dane Key’s first time touching the football in public was a great catch for a touchdown.

    • The tight end room is tight, no pun intended, having Keaton Upshaw back on the field although still protecting his pectoral-muscle with a wrap that will come off in the fall. Brenden Bates flashed with continued improvement. What you didn’t see is the wild-card, Izayah Cummings that’s headed to big things in this offense. Jordan Dingle flashed in what he has been showing in practice.

    • Having had a birds-eye view of the offensive line in a spring practice session and a spring game, it’s something the average fan doesn’t focus on. The transfer portal is important but can be a setback for the present roster. Generally, when you bring someone in that’s to start him. I would hate to see happen to Deondre Buford what happened to Jeremy Flax last season when Dare Rosenthal came on to the team. I don’t see the need for another offensive tackle because Buford is trending to a high level. Zack Yenser said he is very athletic and smart.

    • Huge Kiyaunta Goodwin showed up big in the game on a blitz pickup. He could be a huge part of this offensive line in the fall

    • Running back Mike Drennen is finally showing what he was reported to be coming out of high school. He and Kavosiey Smoke ran hard. What we did not see was the third-leg of the North Hardin contribution, running back La’Vell Wright.

    • In third down situations in a game bigs are replaced with speed rushers. Ohio State transfer Darrion Henry-Young is a pass rushing specialist and showed it on one occasion in the game. He is strong at 6-foot-4, 255-pounds but under the development received from Corey Edmund and Mark Hill he will be an every-down player. Sam Anaele, a recruiting steal from Florida, is one that will show up in the fall. Oxindine and Jordan Wright didn’t participate in the scrimmage.

    • Mark Stoops’ bailiwick has been the defensive backfield throughout his career. And you can tell when he feels like he has a gem. On safety Jordan Lovett Stoops said, “He’s is very athletic,” Stoops responded in an intense way. “I have high expectations for him. This kind of situation really helped him and it’s time for him to get serious about the game and continue to really study and get quality rep out there because he has the ability. We need him to step up and be a player for us. I think he needs to continue to approach the game in a serious nature and if he does that, he will make really big strides before next fall.

    • Inside linebacker is loaded and we didn’t see the biggest thumper, D’Eryk Jackson. I predict all-American for Trevin Wallace.
