  • VAUGHT: Kentucky connections a plus for Jager Burton recruitment

    By LARRY VAUGHT

Lineman Jager Burton, the state's top ranked player in the 2021 football recruiting rankings, has decided to push back his college announcement date.

He was going to do it on Aug. 24 -- his 18th birthday. He wanted to choose between Kentucky, Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson and Oregon before Frederick Douglas High School started its season so he could concentrate on winning a state championship.

However, because he wants to take his official visits and has not taken any, he's decided to wait -- which makes sense and should not be a negative or positive for UK. What is a plus for UK, though, is that teammate Dekel Crowdus, a speedy receiver, has already committed to UK and Burton also knows UK senior linemen Drake Jackson and Landon Young.

"I used to work out with Drake all the time. We did a lot of stuff together," Burton said.

Jackson, a Woodford County High School graduate, holds training sessions in Lexington for younger players to help them improve their football skills.

"I donít charge kids. I do it because they want to get better and I donít think money should be a barrier for that," Jackson said. " It makes me a better player teaching these kids what I know and watching them do it.

"Trying to figure out things by watching them. learning how to think better teaching them has helped me.
Jager is one of those kids I had a chance to work with and get to know. I give him a hard time. I tell him he needs to come more"

Jackson remembers Burton coming with teammate Walker Parks, a Clemson signee. Another player who attended was West Jessamine's Eli Cox, who is now Jackson's teammate at UK.
