  • The Football Wildcats have so far Weather the Valuable Practice Time

    By: LONNY DEMAREE

This is the third consecutive spring the Wildcats have had the extra practice time for the football team. It is constantly paying dividends for the building of the program. This is in part Marks Stoops’ plan for changing of the culture.

The weather projection for the Friday night spring game too is favorable for fan consumption. The weathering for the team has for the most part been clear with sunny days ahead.

Eddie Gran was ask what he wanted to get out of the game Friday night? The very first reply is to come out of the game healthy. He said this is always a fear in such pointless games. But for fan consumption it is vitally important to get a glimpse of what is to come when they kick it off in September. After thirteen practice sessions they haven’t suffered any major setbacks.

The positives coming from under center have been for the most part what the offensive brain trust has been looking for. Terry Wilson has picked up the slack of a missing Benny Snell. “He threw two touchdown passes in the last scrimmage,” quarterback coach Darin Hinshaw stated. He said Gunnar Hoak has been terrific in attitude. “I told him not to come out here and go through the motions,” Hinshaw said. “He has responded very well and is pushing Terry (Wilson). “I know Gunnar like the back of my hand and I feel like he is going to stay in the UK program.

Gran said the running backs have pick up nicely where Benny Snell left off. All three backs have picked up the changed direction of the offense. All three can catch the ball out of the backfield and by all accounts fans will see and appreciate it. “AJ (Rose) is a physical runner and a home run hitter – Kavosiey Smoke is a slasher with speed but he too has some physicality – Chris Rodriquez is a very physical back that in the last scrimmage took a tackler off his feet and the next time he approached that tackler he (tackler) went low. Gran said that in the last scrimmage Rodriquez had a fifty-eight yard touchdown run. “We clocked him at twenty MPH which is pretty good for a 230 pound back,” the coach said.

    A Success Story
This coaching staff is becoming noted for developing players. Two lightly recruited players Calvin Taylor Jr. and Abule Abadi-Fitzgerald on the team and are fast becoming success stories. “These players were two very tall players with frames to put weight on. Taylor was 6-foot-9, 265-pounds and now a starting 310-pound defensive lineman. Abadi-Fitzgerald came to the Wildcats 6-foot-6, 260-pounds and now 295-pounds.

“We moved Fitzgerald in side to the nose-tackle position to toughing him up a make him have to react quicker because he wasn’t picking up the defensive end position well,” Defensive tackle coach Derrick LeBlanc said of the sophomore. “He has to deal with double teams and slip rushes and he has responded very well. He’s going to be a good football player. That is a great story.

So what we have been seeing is fair weather in where the team is right now. Gran said they are much more polished than this time last season and with some good fortune they will be able to keep the storms away.
