  • VAUGHT: Stoops assistants love working for him

    By LARRY VAUGHT

About a year ago recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow had an opportunity to leave Kentucky for Michigan, but he opted to stay with the Cats.

Offensive coordinator Eddie Gran (Georgia) and defensive coordinator Matt House (Kansas City Chiefs) had options to leave recently, too, but both will be back at UK.

Marrow made it clear at UK's recent signing day press conference that he wasn't likely to leave UK as long as coach Mark Stoops remains with the Wildcats.

"He really is a good dude to work for," Marrow said. "I have known him 30 some years and it is a little more personal to me because his dad was my high school (football) coach. His dad was a very strong input in my life and it really hurt me when his dad passed.

"I wouldn’t want to work for nobody else — shouldn't say that because it might hurt me with my contract."

Actually, that might be true but probably not because anyone connected with the UK football program knows what a valuable asset Marrow is. But he might almost work for free -- okay, that's a bit of an exaggeration -- just to stay with Stoops.

"I am not going to work for a guy if he is not about the players and it is all about him," Marrow said. "He is about the players. Talk to other coaches and they would say the same thing. He is just a great guy to work for."

That's why Marrow was glad to see Stoops get national recognition, including some coach of the year honors, after UK's 10-3 season that ended with a Citrus Bowl win over Penn State.

"To see him get the credit he got this year meant more to me than it did him," Marrow said. "From what he built this thing from was tough. It (being at Kentucky with Stoops) means more to me because we grew up together (in Youngstown, Ohio)."

Thanks, Harlow--I corrected it to 22. No idea, of course, and watch 18 be the right answer lol. Anyway, I appreciate the heads up.
