  • Upbeat Mark Stoops Addressed the Louisville Alumni Chapter

    By: LONNY DEMAREE

Coach Mark Stoops is caught up in the talking season leading into football practice. He was upbeat perhaps more so than any time since he's been at the University of Kentucky. Could it be that he feels he can showcase some winning talent?

Stoops spoke to about seven hundred anxious fans in the downtown Marriott Hotel. The banquet's tasty food preceding the opening introduction of Mark Stoops on the podium. He gave a in depth overview of his 2018 addition of the Cats. After which his two coordinators Eddie Gran and Darin Hawkins took their turn at the mike. Offensive coordinator Eddie Gran talked about his guys that will be counted on to light up the scoreboard. Last season the output dropped off from thirty-points per game to 25.2. That no doubt he must improve to eclipse the seven-win total the Cats have amassed the last two seasons.

For that to happen Gran must find some play makers on the outside of the offensive formation.

Defensive coordinator Matt House expressed confidence the Cats will improve in stopping the run something the team has had trouble accomplishing in recent years. He feels depth needed the complete the season in good shape. On the defensive side of the ball there are in the person of linebacker Josh Allen and defensive back Mike Edwards at least two all-star candidates. House will be diligently looking for added all-star caliber players on that side of the football.

There were few questions coming from the audience about special team’s personnel. They are one third of the football team's winning formula. Stoops talked extensively about what he expects Lynn Bowden to execute on the field of play this season. Bowden, because he had to pass the Clearing House missed the entire summer of work at the university and that all the other summer enrollees enjoyed. He had to switch to a position he had never played in high which was wide receiver. Stoops likened like it drinking water from a hose. ”Bowden has now had a fall, winter workouts, spring practice, summer strength and conditioning,” Stoops said to buttress his belief the fans will see a whole different player. Stoops said Bowden will be dynamic in the return game.

A questioner from the audience as Stoops to pontificate on some surprises on the team on each side of the football. He as well reiterated the effectiveness of nose-tackle Quinton Bohanna, - Stoops and any other coach or player that is armed with information on defensive linemen Phil Hoskins, they are all very high on what he brings to the grid-iron. At this point we are very sure as fall practice proceeds we will be hearing much more about these players. On the offensive side Stoops singled out tight end Justin Rigg and running back A. J. Rose

The approximately seven-hundred patrons left the huge room with some hope that Wildcats will offer some excitement this fall.

Thanks, Harlow--I corrected it to 22. No idea, of course, and watch 18 be the right answer lol. Anyway, I appreciate the heads up.
