  • Scrimmage and Spring Practice Notes

    By: LONNY DEMAREE

]Mark Stoops said the football team had a good first scrimmage outside on Kroger Field. He said the defense has a lot of guys that have played and they are ahead right now. “They should be,” the coach said. “Defensively I was very pleased. They are much more stout, pretty physical inside, and didn’t miss many tackle and didn’t give up any big plays.”
As Stoops and the players said the emphasis is finishing plays and the game. They stayed healthy coming out of the scrimmage. Defensive players of note this spring coming from coaches and obtrusive observers:

    • Josh Paschal is mentioned often and by his account he is back home where he’s is comfortable. Stoops said – “He has energy, can play inside or outside and is a very good player. Paschal said he is 280-pounds and that will be his playing weight. He said he doesn’t eat fried foods.

    • Kash Daniel is doing a good job. Defensively he is doing a great job and has taken over the leadership role left by Courtney Love. Middleton point out Kash Daniel and Jordan Jones had a good scrimmage.

    • Phil Hoskins came to the Wildcats last season as a junior college transfer with three years of eligibility. He brought with him two bad shoulders and after a year in the weight room he’s being disruptive the defensive coordinator said. Stoops said he is jumping out at him.

    • Quinton Bohanna is picking up where he left off last season only more maturely better.

    • Abule Abadi- Fitzgerald is said by Adrian Middleton to be strong by and is just learning to play the game.

    • Calvin Taylor did his usual day on the field. His position coach Derrick LeBlanc calls him “Mister Reliable.”

    • Jordan Griffin scored a touchdown off a muffed play by the offense.

    • Jaylin Bannerman who moved back to defensive end from tight end according to Middleton, has found a home. He said Bannerman is a good pass rusher expect him to get some sacks. He is more physical and stronger.

That in a nutshell this is the progress of some individual defensive players on a squad that has exponentially more depth.
