  • Charles Bassey not being recruited by Kentucky puzzling?

    By LARRY VAUGHT

When it comes to recruiting, Kentucky coach John Calipari has a plan that always seems to bring a highly-ranked recruiting class to Kentucky.

He had a bevy of high school stars a the recent Big Blue Madness. However, what puzzles me more is one player that was not there -- 2019 prospect Charles Bassey. He's a consensus top five player in the 2019 class and now plays for Aspire Academy in Louisville.

Yet there seems to be little or no contact between UK and Bassey even though he's now playing in the Bluegrass after transferring from a St. Anthony's in Texas where he played last year along with three teammates.

ESPN has Bassey as one of the top prospects in the 2019 class. Part of ESPN's scouting report on the 6-10 Bassey says, "Bassey's tremendous length and athleticism is the foundation of what will make him an immediate impact player on the major college level. He sprints the floor and rebounds in and out of his area in addition to being a excellent shot blocker on the bal."

Bassey is from Nigeria originally. He already has scholarship offers from Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Baylor, Tennessee, Washington, UCLA, T, Creighton, Western Kentucky and others.

Aspire coach Jeremy Kipness knows how good Bassey is now, and can be in the future.

“Right now he has such a solid foundation and skill set to go along with a God-given athleticism and physique,” Kipness, a former assistant coach at Louisville, said. “I think most people don’t realize that even though how good a player he is, he is an even better kid.

“He embraces the grind. He really does. He is very coachable. It just adds to a special recipe. There are a lot of talented players but they do not have the intangibles — but he does. He has God-given talent and a high ceiling for the future."

Bassey will be playing in the Marshall County Hoop Fest in Benton the first weekend in December.

Thanks, Harlow--I corrected it to 22. No idea, of course, and watch 18 be the right answer lol. Anyway, I appreciate the heads up.
