  • For the Wildcats it's All About Experience

    By: LONNY DEMAREE

For the Wildcat's to reach a higher level of success experience has to be strongly in the Mix. Former Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin proved that importance when he went 6-7. 9-4, 9-4 and bowls in all three season. Bobby Johnson and his recruiting laid the groundwork for Franklin's success. When perusing the roster when Franklin arrived the roster was peppered throughout with RS (red shirt) by their names.

So now Kentucky's roster is starting look much the same yet there are still only 13 seniors on the two deep depth chart. Perhaps with the favorable schedule - the established offensive identity with the first time in the Stoops era they have the same offensive coordinator - and the first time the same quarterback is in place.

In Stephen Johnson has some tangibles in that he can throw the football with zip. Darin Hinshaw said he can teach a guy to throw the football at various levels. The things the coach has to convey to the quarterback is the nuances of the game. Hinshaw went out and found a quarterback that had the tangible he could coach, coupled with the ability to stay cool under pressure, selectively pull the ball down and run with the ball. Johnson can create ball skills in that he protects the football and has command of the huddle. Eddie Gran said Johnson has the morals and the personality to be and effective leader of his team. Hinshaw said Johnson is always the same and at time his cool rubs off him when he gets disjointed. With his slight of build he has a better slide that a lot of baseball players.

Johnson and the other quarterbacks have three seniors Dorian Baker, Blake Bone and Garrett Johnson all of which have had some success on the field in making plays.
