  • The UK Defense Spring Boarded off Lee Corso Comment

As the Wildcats prep for the TaxSlayer Bowl many questions have arisen as to the efficiency the UK defense will play with against the multiple-option offense of the Georgia Tech Yellowjackets? D. J. Eliot called it a double-set option team.

Almost every defensive player that we’ve interviewed remember what Lee Corso said very early in the season alluding to UK have the worst defense in the country. “That’s their own opinion and it really doesn’t matter what they say because they don’t know what’s going on behind closed doors,” Alvonte Bell said. “They know what they see on the surface. We showed him (Corso, after trying to avoid saying his name) that we weren’t the worst defense. He could say what he wants. We just showed him against South Carolina. Action speaks louder than words.”

Can the zone-read offense Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson ran assist in giving the Cats a glimpse of what they will see against Tech? More than likely not. This is a totally different animal. Though at least one of the key players in UK’s defense Alvonte Bell said he played against the triple option against J. P. Taravella High School in Coral Springs Florida. “I’ve watched Georgia tech a few times over the years in high school,” Bell stated. “Taravella is in Broward County and they ran the triple option just as good as Georgia Tech or Navy or Army. I don’t think it’s going to be hard playing them because they ran they option like gap scheme, and zones, pulling, and stuff like that. That’s the type of offense we’ve been playing against since Tennessee. But more technical and more crisp since they have to do more.

Bell’s #92 showed up a lot in the U of L game. D. J. Eliot said that Bell progressed a lot throughout the year and having him for another year will be very important. “Alvonte Bell did a good job for us Saturday (U of L game),” Defensive line coach Jimmy Brumbaugh in glowing terms, said. “We had a package for him he has been use as kind of that utility guy and when he got in the game he did some good things. Knocked a couple balls down, had a couple TFL’s. It allowed us to get more speed on the field. We can move him in and out and you like bodies like that because he can play inside and he can play outside.”

Josh Allen talked about going against the type of offense Georgia Tech presents. “We just have to read our keys and attack,” Allen said echoing Brumbaugh about just doing your job and not somebody else’s. “Not trying to do too much, be discipline and just play.” Brumbaugh said they don’t want to overthink out there. Allen said yeah. “We just got to read our keys and go to the football.” He said it’s been a trying season blocking out the early noise but it’s been fun because it’s brought him closer to his teammates. Some thanks to mister Corso.

When Corso said it, it was true. Not a Corso fan by any means, but he was calling it like he saw it at the time.

Let's see what this defense can do against Ga Tech now.

I like his confidence, but he doesn't understand the strategy in play here........like the part about keeping your mouth shut about upcoming opponents and what you think you know about them 3 weeks before a bowl game.

Not sure anyone on the D should be taking anyone lightly. They got better over the course of the season but hardly covered themselves in glory. Still gave up massive numbers

Hope the coaching staff gives him (and like-minded others) an appropriate attitude adjustment.
