  • Kentucky receivers springing big plays with blocking as well as catching

    By LARRY VAUGHT:

Coach Mark Stoops discussed the Kentucky wide receivers recently.

On how UK's wide receivers have been blocking the last few games:

”I think something we talk about all the time is being selfless, and that's not always the easiest trait to get accomplished within a football team because you have some very competitive guys and guys that want to make plays for their team. And we have some very talented wide receivers and they've been called upon to do quite a bit of blocking. We've made our fair share of big catches and big plays in the past games, but it takes that selfless attitude and that team first mentality to go downfield and be aggressive in our blocking and finishing off blocks. We've been very good and very selfless with that and with our approach to blocking and springing big plays, and you wouldn't get as many big runs if those guys weren't down there doing that. There's also room for improvement there. We show guys on film all the time that there's never an opportunity to take one play off and there's certainly a few things we'll get corrected. But I’ve been very pleased and proud of the way those guys have been aggressive downhill blocking and springing some big runs.”

On if that blocking is a credit to Lamar Thomas or a specific receiver or two for setting the tone:

“I think it’s always a group effort, it’s a team effort in the approach and the attitude of our teaching. I think Lamar has done a good job of getting a lot of guys, and I think Coach Gran has and Coach Hinshaw and, again, just the whole team trying to be very selfless and play for each other.”

Wow! That is a tremendous observation and Stoops is smart to point it out. I believe if anyone looks back on the Mizzou game the wide receivers made some terrific blocks to spring Boom and Benny. I gave a lot of credit to the guards and tackles on the zone blocking schemes, but when I think back on it there was good blocking from the outside. I will have to focus on that Saturday Night.

My favorite play of the fame was one where Badet, who just escorted Boom down the sideline for fifteen more yards, desperately motioned for Snell to get behind him so he could block for him too.

Benny didn't see him, but that doesn't matter. When a 180 pound WR is pleading to block it's a beautiful thing to see.

I think you will be pleased. IMO, the entire receiving corps has been doing a great job setting and holding blocks for long enough to make a difference. It is hard to follow on TV, as much of the time the receivers disappear off the screen right after the ball is snapped, but I have caught enough downfield action in the last 6 games to say they are doing a good job of either blocking or of selling the route and running the defender off the play.

This is a great sign that all the players are buying into the system.
