Before Kentucky played South Carolina on Saturday, 9-year-old Brendan Murphy of Corbin kept trying to use FaceTime. His mother, Jennifer, thought he was trying to reach family members of friends.
Finally she found out he was reaching out to UK football player Jacob Hyde, one of four football players who came to visit him when he was in the UK Children's Hospital because of a complex case of MRSA (a contagious and antibiotic-resistant staph bacteria that leads to potentially dangerous infection) in his bloodstream.
She said her son was "blowing up" Hyde's phone before he finally answered and actually talked a few minutes with Brendan.
But guess what? On Sunday, it was Hyde hitting up Brendan on FaceTime just as he said he would.
"He was so sweet with him. He said, 'I told you I'd get you that win yesterday,'" Jennifer Murphy said. "They had a good little talk while Brendan ate spaghetti and Jacob talked about people lined up for Big Blue Madness tickets already.
"Jacob is a stand up guy for sure. Big congrats to the Cats on their win and thank you (Hyde) for being so great with him."
Brendan's brother plays football for Corbin and his mother says he has always wanted to wear his oldest brother's number on his jersey. However, he just told her he might want to wear No. 36 -- Hyde's number.
Sandy Hensley, a family friend, was impressed when Hyde and teammates Drew Barker, Courtney Love and De'Niro Laster came to see Brendan in the hospital. So did basketball player Derek Willis.
She was just as impressed with what Hyde did on FaceTime for a 9-year-old boy in Corbin.
"I think its fabulous," Hensley said. "I hope coach (Mark) Stoops knows what stand-up guys off the field that he has."
