  • Wow Factor makes Believers on Facility Commitment

    By: LONNY DEMAREE

From the old Shively workout center to the shiny new 45M dollar facility that has become operational. The names of the past are for instance then strength and conditioning Coach Pat Etcheberry who is now a professional tennis trainer. Etcheberry is a reminder of the last very outstanding team of Wildcats produced by the University of Kentucky. In that year there were seven Pro prospects in blue and white that defeated the Wisconsin Badgers that had four picks in the first two rounds of the 1985 Pro draft.

Just a reminder of the past and where the Wildcat have ascended to….fabulous. Now the task is for this team to put W’s in the books. Dan Berezowitz is the Director of Football Recruiting Operations and is one of the very important cogs that acquires those W’s.

Berezowitz came to the Wildcats three and a half years ago when Mark Stoops arrived. He said along with recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow they have about seven people that perform various and sundry task. They do graphics, put in film, track down data, conduct tours, and there are lots of logistics. Unofficial and official visits game day coordinating with recruits.

What about the ‘Wow Factor?’ “The recruits that have been here, every person, former players, everybody has loved it,” Berezowitz said. “When recruits walk in here and see our game day facilities they say wow. It’s been a ‘Wow Factor’ ever since we started.
“All the kids we are recruiting, they’ve been to other places and they compare ours to other facilities. We feel like we’ve got one of the best and when you package the whole thing together it’s just what we need for recruiting.”

The coach said they didn’t cut any corners. He posed the question to the media, “did you see anything that we missed?” He said Mitch Barnhart gave them a budget and he’s sure they went over it but….. Berezowitz said coaches on this staff have been to other places and he’s been at Texas with Mack Brown and North Carolina. He said – “This is one of the best in the country. It’s really, really nice.

The coaches are wowed every day when they walk in to the place and one day will not reveal everything there is to see. The coach said this is like an amusement park.

He minimized decommitments because he said recruiting is fluid. It happens all over the country. Guys come, guys go, and guys change their minds. It’s who we sign in February is all that matters. Prior they saw this on power points, on wall drops, paper, and they bought in.
Retinal scans needed to get into the building has that FBI feel or Pentagon technology to it.
Benezowitz said – “We want other schools chasing us in terms of their facilities.”

The facility war in college football is won only with constant maintenance. Upgrades and improvements need to be built in to every program's budget. It's not a one shot deal.
